Higher Education Losing its Value? Or Too Many Scientists? | Can ...

?

First, the big picture. Here is the entire market for Ph.D.'s, including those graduating from humanities, science, education, and other programs. The blue line tracks students who have a job waiting for them after graduation. The green line tracks those signed up for a post-doctorate study program. The red line stands for the jobless (though a sliver of them are heading to another academic program).
The pattern reaching back to 2001 is clear -- fewer jobs, more unemployment, and more post-doc work -- especially in the sciences. A post doc essentially translates into toiling as a low-paid lab hand (emphasis on low-paid). Once it was just a one or two year rite of passage where budding scientists honed their research skills. Now it can stretch on for half a decade .

?

?

As the article makes clear, the charts aren't perfect and there are a lot of assumptions that went into the chart. Nevertheless, if we assume it paints a picture somewhat close to reality, it illustrates a potentially new trend.

The described situation?PhDs not getting jobs?is kind of sad for those pursuing higher education. Once upon a time, only some soft areas like humanities and arts graduates had difficulties finding jobs but now it looks like science and engineering is facing the same problem.
?

It's not clear to me if employers are starting to discount higher education (possibly due to too many degree-holders, who are?not as skilled as several decades ago)... or if it is due to a skills mismatch (America graduating too many scientists). Leave your thoughts.

Bernanke will likely be pressed on Fed bond buying

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Chairman Ben Bernanke will be pressed to clarify the Federal Reserve's approach to the still-sluggish U.S. economy when he testifies to Congress this week.

Bernanke will give his semiannual report to the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday and the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday.

Lawmakers will likely question the chairman about the future of the Fed's bond buying program, his view of the economy and his concerns about the budget impasse between Congress and the Obama administration.

Here are some issues Bernanke will likely face and his possible responses:

Q: The Federal Reserve announced in December that it planned to buy Treasurys and mortgage bonds at a rate of $85 billion a month. It's said it plans to keep buying bonds until the job market improves "substantially." But the minutes of the Fed's January meeting showed that several officials worried that the bond purchases could eventually escalate inflation, unsettle investors or cause the Fed to absorb losses once it begins selling its investments. There's clearly division within the Fed's policy committee. Can you explain the Fed's thinking?

A: Bernanke said at a global finance meeting this month that the U.S. economy was recovering. But he added that with unemployment at 7.9 percent, "we are still far from healthy, vibrant conditions." That was seen as a sign that he's still comfortable with the pace of the bond purchases. Still, Bernanke might address the worries of some Fed policymakers. If he signals agreement with them, it could suggest that the Fed may scale back its purchases from $85 billion a month sometime this year. Many analysts think he won't dismiss the concerns but will seek to minimize them. For example, he may say there's no evidence inflation is getting out of hand. He's also likely to repeat that in determining the size of future bond purchases, the Fed will balance the benefits of further purchases against the risks. The bond purchases are intended to keep long-term interest rates low and encourage borrowing and spending.

Q: How long will the Fed keep its key short-term rate at a record low? Its target for the federal funds rate, which helps determine many consumer and business loan rates, has been near zero since December 2008.

A: At its December meeting, the Fed for the first time linked future rate increases to unemployment. It said it planned to keep the funds rate near zero until unemployment falls below 6.5 percent, as long as inflation expectations remain below 2.5 percent. Based on most forecasts, that would mean the Fed wouldn't start raising short-term rates until late 2015. Bernanke will likely explain the reasoning behind dropping a calendar date target and instead linking future rate increases to the economy's health. He has said that such a link gives the Fed more flexibility: It doesn't have to keep changing the target date for any future rate increase.

Q: What is the Fed's view of the U.S. job market and economy?

A: Bernanke will likely point to improvements while also stressing that unemployment at 7.9 percent remains too high. He might note that two areas of the economy that are faring best ? housing and auto sales ? have been boosted by the Fed's low-rate policies. At its January meeting, the Fed said the economy "paused" late last year because of temporary factors and reaffirmed its commitment to try to stimulate growth by keeping borrowing costs low. Bernanke will likely stick to that view.

Q: What's the likely effect of the uncertainty caused by the failure of Congress and the Obama administration to reach a long-term budget deal?

A: Bernanke warned in December that the Fed wouldn't be able to offset damage from the fiscal cliff ? the combination of tax increases and spending cuts that would have hit on Jan. 1. Congress and the administration did reach a deal that prevented income tax rates from rising except on the highest-income taxpayers. But it only put off the budget cuts until Friday, when $85 billion in across-the-board cuts will kick in. A separate agreement lifted the government's borrowing limit until mid-May. In January, Bernanke noted that an impasse over the debt ceiling in 2011 had caused a first-ever downgrade of long-term U.S. debt. He said Congress must "avoid a situation where our government doesn't pay its bills." Bernanke will likely repeat warnings about the harm to the economy from prolonged budgetary uncertainty. But he will probably also caution against deep spending cuts or steep tax increases while the economy remains fragile.

Simple method devised for determining atrial fibrillation risk in women

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of abnormal heart rhythm, affecting 2.5 million Americans. If left undetected or untreated, atrial fibrillation can lead to stroke. Determining who is at increased risk for atrial fibrillation has been difficult, especially among individuals without established heart disease. But now, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital have devised and tested a simple atrial fibrillation risk prediction model, based on six easily obtained factors: a woman's age, height, weight, blood pressure, alcohol consumption and smoking history.

The model is published in the online edition of the European Heart Journal on February 26, 2013.

"The real strength of this model is its simplicity," said Brendan Everett, MD, the lead author of the study and a cardiologist at BWH. "Using this tool, we can estimate an otherwise healthy woman's risk of developing atrial fibrillation over the next 10 years. The tool only requires that a patient's health care provider know some basic information about the patient. There is no need for any advanced testing or additional cost in order to use the risk tool."

The risk prediction model was derived and tested in more than 20,000 middle aged women of European ancestry. Researchers found that the new model was significantly better at identifying women at increased risk for atrial fibrillation over the next 10 years than estimating a woman's risk of atrial fibrillation using her age alone.

"Nearly one in four women were reassigned to a more accurate atrial fibrillation risk category by using the new model," said Everett. "While specific interventions to lower a woman's risk of a first atrial fibrillation episode are still in development, this personalized information can help health care providers stress the importance of heart healthy behaviors, including weight loss and moderation of alcohol consumption."

The study also examined whether recently discovered genetic markers for atrial fibrillation risk improved researchers' ability to accurately predict a woman's risk for atrial fibrillation and indeed, the researchers found that a genetic risk score has potential to improve the ability to predict atrial fribrillation. However, Everett notes that while this information is scientifically interesting, more research on genetic testing is needed before this combination model can be recommended for use in the general public. Further research is also needed to determine if the study results would apply to men or a broader population of women.

Singer Morrissey says no to Kimmel, 'Duck Dynasty'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The TV series "Duck Dynasty" is coming between Morrissey and Jimmy Kimmel.

The singer and animal rights activist says he canceled his appearance Tuesday on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" because "Duck Dynasty" cast members will be on the talk show.

Morrissey says he can't perform on a show with what he called people who "amount to animal serial killers."

A&E's "Duck Dynasty" reality show follows a Louisiana family with a business selling duck calls and decoys.

A&E did not immediately respond to requests for comment from it and the Robertson family.

A person familiar with the Kimmel show's plans confirmed that Morrissey was to appear. The person lacked authority to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The person says Morrissey's performance will be rescheduled.

ABC says the Churchill band will perform Tuesday on Kimmel's show but declined comment on the switch.

HTC's Peter Chou: 'We are driving changes inside the company' (video)

HTC CEO Peter Chou

Is this the One? That's pretty much the question we put to HTC's Peter Chou, whose company has had a tough time battling other mobile giants with its original One series. The CEO was kind enough to have a little chat with us after the One launch -- although his responses were often vague. We covered topics from what went wrong last year, how the new flagship device will bring the company back in the game, and where does HTC see itself from the perspective of consumers. Read on for the highlights as well as the full video clip after the break.

Looking back at the good old days since the original One series launch, Chou once again acknowledged the fact that his company didn't do so well with marketing. "We had a few great devices, a lot of innovation, but we just need to let people know all of these HTC innovations. So today we are introducing the HTC One and that's exactly what we're going to do," said Chou. The CEO is also confident that his new flagship device has what it takes to deter consumers from the competition. "HTC will be offering consumers a great phone with great experience, these quality are non-compromised. We are very confident the consumers will appreciate these innovations, experience and quality."

"We just need to let people know all of these HTC innovations."

Also in the face of the likes of Samsung and many Chinese manufacturers, Chou believes that a close relationship with partners as well key to success. "We are working very closely with partners," said Chou. He also hinted at the changes inside HTC not so long ago. "We are driving changes inside the company, pushing the innovation and pushing the execution."

As any executive would do at a launch event, Chou went on to pimp the highlights of the One: BlinkFeed (live feed of ambient information), BoomSound (dual front-facing loudspeaker) and Zoe (multimedia gallery and editor on steroids). Again, the exec emphasized the importance of great experience, especially with Zoe where the user doesn't need to do much, and yet they still get this "awesome emotion and personality" with the movies they share with people. "We think that this is a great way of providing new experience to smartphone users," Chou added.

"The megapixel myth is the wrong way to go."

We went on to ask how HTC will handle the tricky task of convincing consumers into the 4-megapixel but more efficient UltraPixel camera, to which we were given a familiar response. "The megapixel myth is the wrong way to go, so what really matters is to give you much better image quality with great innovative, exciting experience. So that's where we're focusing on." Hopefully there'll also be plenty of hands-on areas for folks to check out the camera; and we'll certainly be giving it a good test.

Interestingly, the One doesn't come with a microSD slot (as featured on the Japanese and Asian Butterfly variants) and Qi wireless charging (as featured on the Verizon versions of some HTC flagships), but Chou wasn't too keen on addressing these , along with the seemingly smaller battery size when compared to some of the competition. "We are confident that consumers appreciate our innovations and our differentiation is very, very clear," Chou responded vaguely. Well, we shall see about that when we eventually get to review the One.

Make Beautiful Outdoor Dining Furniture Out of Wooden Pallets

Make Beautiful Outdoor Dining Furniture Out of Wooden PalletsYou can turn wooden pallets into several useful things, from desks to patio furniture to even a garden shed. DIYer Sarah Williams decided to trust the usefulness of wooden pallets and build an outdoor table and chair set.

While not a quick project, making a little furniture out of wooden pallets isn't too complex of a project for someone who wants to get started with woodworking. After properly dismantling the pallets and a little sawing, you just need to assemble the pieces in the right places (and add a little paint when you're done, of course). If you want to give this project a try, check out the full image-based how-to Sarah posted to Imgur.

Rebuking Feminism: State of The Union Address: FATHERHOOD

You say that men are the cause of fatherless children. You say ?what makes you a man isn?t just the ability to conceive a child but having the courage to raise one? Mr. President, women are 2/3 of those who divorce and abandon their families. Women are also choosing to get pregnant by uncommitted men they are not married to and who are above their station, men who are quite happy to fuck the women who are attracted to them. Women are doing this by choice and they are also getting pregnant by choice and sometimes without the consent of the man by way of birth control fraud. Our single mother birth rate is now at 52% of all births.

Mr. President, family courts alienate children from their fathers by default as a matter of course and the VAWA legislation has provisions that separate children from their fathers without due process of law. Women have default access to men?s bodies and the fruits of its labor regardless of their actions, they have default access to government husbandry welfare regardless of their actions and choices as to with who and in what instance they choose to conceive. We must make changes that expect responsibility from women by creating at least one or more liabilities for their whoredom. ??

??

?To increase the amount of fathers in the home we must reform marriage and family law by ending or increasing standards on grants of no-fault divorce, mandate shared custody of children so that men can ?raise a child? as you say and do so equally. By granting shared custody women will have less incentive to abandon their families. Or?. we can simply return to father-right custody altogether. When father-right custody existed, contrary to the mother-right we have now, men vary rarely divorced and abandoned their family. Even still, it is not men in the majority who do so. ?

??

?We must also give men reproductive rights to abortion so that men who do not consent to fatherhood in the first place may abort from the ramifications of conception just as women can. Women may decide for the child to be fatherless in this instance or choose to abort. Sex, as it is for women, is not consent to conceive a child nor should it be for men who wish not to become fathers. We must reform VAWA to give rights to the accused and at very least give men equal protection as is granted us by The Constitution so that we may spuriously use VAWA against women in attempt to gain custody of our children in such fashion as is used against men. As is current, the women's union wants to include all citizens and non citizens with the exception of heterosexual males. If this legislation is not intended to give all citizens equal protection under law what is it's real intent? If it was a just law that provided due process, why is the women's union so adamant to exclude men from accessing the provisions of supposed justice therein?

We must decrease incentive for women to get knocked up by a man above her station by choosing to get pregnant outside of marriage by way of a man that is not committed to her. We must do this by limiting her default ability to gain resources from this man by child support as well as bar access to government subsidies if she is not married to the man she chooses to get pregnant from. If a man is not committed, and the couple not mutually consenting through the mutual agreement implied by marriage, a woman should have a liability in choosing to get pregnant by him. We must remember that pregnancy is 100% a woman's choice. ?

?This will have exponential effect upon future father involvement as it is the case that boys who themselves grew up without a father are more likely not to commit to fatherhood themselves. Mr. President, fatherlessness creates fatherlessness and fathers create fathers.

Mr. President, studies show that boys without fathers fare much worse in overall health, education, well being and general life outcome than girls from the same home. They have lower academic achievement, higher crime rates, higher gang membership rates and suicide rates. A society of underachieving young men from fatherless homes do not make adequate husbands for the nations daughters. Strengthening fatherhood strengthens the nation?s sons and by doing so adds to the above listed exponential effect of laying the foundation for strong families and the growth of father inclusion and marriage. Strong young men make strong families. Implimenting pro fatherhood laws will both increase the quality of men to choose from in terms of boosting overall male health and thus acievement but also improve the likelihood that these men will invest in fatherhood themselves seeing as it is they had a father present in their lives. ???

?You say you wish to ?remove the financial deterrents to marriage for low income couples? What do you mean by this? I believe this would entail providing tax incentives to maintain a marriage as well as welfare reform to a system that currently provides government husbandry to single mothers leading them to choose the government over a husband and fatherhood for children and grants them default access to these provisions regardless of her behavior and her choices. ?

?? I propose by enacting the above changes to marriage law, divorce law, VAWA and by granting reproductive rights to men we can not only reduce men?s reluctance to marry but decrease women?s propensity to abandon and divorce their families in the numbers they do as well as drastically reduce the out of wedlock single mother hypergamous whore birth rate (Graph). The changes women made to law during The Cultural Revolution must be reformed so that they are once again adults with not only responsibilities for their choices but liabilities for their choices as well. By enacting these pro family, pro marriage and pro fatherhood initiatives men are more likely to be continued members of the family and included in it in the first place. Women are more likely not to conceive a child outside marriage as they would lose default access to both men's resources and that of the collective tax base by way of government welfare.?

? Mr. President, Please observe the graph below as well. Do you see the reset in the trend momentum of single mother births beginning in 1993? This is when welfare reform took place and government actually created incentives for women not to be supported by government husband and to get a job. With the added burden of having to work, women created relationships with men to do so for them instead, men that could potentially be fathers to their children sir. I ask you this, imagine if we created more responsibilities and liabilities for women both as to with who and in what circumstances they choose to conceive a child? I propose that giving women the responsibilities of an adult and liabilities for their choices we could further reduce the single mother birth rate and in fact possibly create a declining trend momentum in female deadbeats who divorce and abandon their family, lechery, irresponsibility and overall whoredom. We can thereby reduce fatherlessness as well. ?

?

??

Mr. President, young women make on average 8% more than young men and this is from the calculated average from every state in the union. Time Magazine has also concluded that young women out earn their potential husbands in every state in the union. They comprise 60% of college degrees as well. A contributing factor to male underachievement as compared to women can be attributed to fatherlessness. As you can see from the graph above as well, it is only when women marry (or as is commonly the case) they decide to become a single mother and have an out of wedlock birth do they make less than men. If you want women to earn more then your proposal for govt. funded child care facilities will help that. Children must be turned over to these facilities at a young age i.e. 2-4yrs old. Their education can be determined by The People's? Dept. of Education as the Soviets did. However, I believe implementing the soviet model i.e. centralized funding and government controlled educational content is not a viable solution for our families.

Kandi Burruss Speaks On Controversy Surrounding ?Stay Prayed ...

Kandi Stay Prayed Up

Kandi Burruss of? The Real Housewives of Atlanta has released the artwork that will accompany her new gospel single ?Stay Prayed Up.?

The song has both the gospel and secular music industry buzzing and the song, which features the vocals of Pastor Marvin Sapp, has actually surprised those who have heard the final product.

Burruss, who also plays host to ?Kandi Koated Nights,? a popular late night web series covering all things sex, and creator of ?Bedroom Kandi,? (her line of pleasure products and sex toys), shocked the public with news she teamed up with Sapp for the release of the gospel single.

While she?s fully aware of the controversial nature of it all, Kandi shared a few of the lyricis as well as her thoughts about the criticism she?s received about her choice to venture into ?church music?.

?Lyrics by a sinner/believer (me)? ? Kandi via Instagram

Details below?

Kandi Stay Prayed Up Lyrics

Burruss shared the following via her personal Instagram page, stating:

?I knew when I decided to do it that I would be criticized. That?s to be expected.?

The single mom, who is engaged to her live-in fianc?, Todd Tucker, is moving forward with plans to unveil her newest musical venture and from what I?ve heard? ?Stay Prayed Up? will surprise many a ?Christian? music connoisseur.

?I am honest about who I am,? Kandi continued, before revealing her Christian background and lineage.

?My great grand father & my grandfather were Bishops in The Church of God Holiness. I believe in God but I have always struggled with the rules of the church, just like a lot of people.?

Though she admittedly leads a contrary life in terms of the principles outlined in the word of God for sexual purity and holiness, Burruss is using her new gospel song as ?a testimony for me. Hopefully people with a similar struggle can relate.?

In my opinion the message is still the same.. doesn?t matter who delivers it.

Parents of Sandy Hook victims launch #1MillionHearts campaign

A girl attempts to keep candles lit at a memorial outside Sandy Hook Elementary School. (Dylan Stableford)

Sandy Hook Promise--the organization formed last month to honor the 20 children and 6 adults killed in the Newtown, Conn., school shootings--has launched a social media campaign for Valentine's Day to mark the two-month anniversary of the massacre.

The group--which includes dozens of parents of the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims--is asking supporters to send virtual Valentines on Feb. 14 using the hashtag "#1MillionHearts."

Participants can share the messages on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest from a page on the group's website.

Alyssa Milano, rapper will.I.am and Jennifer Hudson--who performed at the Super Bowl with a Newtown children's choir--are among the celebrities who have already pledged their support for the #1MillionHearts initiative from their Twitter feeds.

"I'm sending a valentine to #Newtown with #1MillionHearts for @SandyHook," Hudson tweeted. "Join me."

Lee Shull, co-founder of Sandy Hook Promise, said Valentine's Day "seemed natural to create a special way for Americans to continue channeling their love and support."

[Related: Parents of Sandy Hook victims speak, urging ?real change?]

Last month, the group held an emotional press conference in Newtown to promote a national dialogue on gun violence, mental health and school safety.

"This is a promise to do everything in our power to be remembered not as the town filled with grief and victims but as a place where real change began," Nelba M?rquez-Greene, whose 6-year-old daughter Ana was killed in the Dec. 14 shooting, said.

The group stopped short of taking sides in the gun control debate.

"Some of us are gun owners," Tom Bittman, co-founder of the initiative, said last month. "We hunt, target shoot, protect our homes. We teach our sons and daughters how to use guns safely. [But] we're not afraid of a discussion about responsibility and accountability. The bottom line is we must act. We can't let this happen again. Doing nothing is no longer an option."

Dead Space 3 Review (Single Player) ? The One Gaming Nation ...

There are only a few franchises that when I hear a sequel is coming out I don?t really worry, Borderlands, Battlefield and Dead Space. Dead Space 2 may have?faltered?a little with the addition of unpolished multiplayer, but thankfully they ditched that idea for co-op.

Isaac Clarke?is back after having spent many years in isolation from EarthGov and the world, so much so that Ellie has left him to get on with her life. When Ellie?s ship goes missing, Captain Robert Norton?and Sergeant John Carver?come to Isaac to help locate her. ?At the same time, the Unitologists want to put a bullet in his brain so that no one else will be able to stop the rise of the Markers, and that?s where you take over as Isaac.

The game is pretty solid from a controls point of view. They followed the old adage, ?If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.? This is great to me because the developers realized that they could focus more attention on other aspects of the game to help widen the scope of the Dead Space universe. What has been added is a larger focus on action, drop-in/drop-out co-op, and the ability to craft your own weapon, but we?ll get to all that in a few.

?Strategic Dismemberment? is back yet again and I am not complaining. Depending on how you go about taking out a Necromorph could make the encounter quick and painless or leave you scrounging around for meds. Remember people, Necromorphs are not zombies: take out the arms and legs first! The ability to craft your own weapons and upgrade your weapons is a great feature. While playing you will come across blueprints and crafting material to help build your perfect weapon. Also, the mining bot, when used at the right time, can help gain even more mining material. Throughout the entire first playthrough I have been using the Planet Cracker and a custom built?javelin?shotgun; I just upgrade them with the lastest weapon mods.

No surprise here, visually Dead Space 3 looks amazing. ?But, really, what do you expect; it was made by Visceral Games. What is a surprise is that they have a heavy focus on action sequences this time around. I know a lot of people are complaining about this, but I honestly feel it?s refreshing. I see it kind of as a ?damned if you do damned if you don?t? situation. ?By adding more action elements to the game you broaden the consumer base (and take heat from the core fans), but if you kept it the same as the last two games the core fans would be complaining that the game is stale and uninspired, plus you wouldn?t have tapped into the action demographic. To all the naysayers out there that are complaining they sold out and destroyed the franchise, shut up?you?re stupid. They expanded the franchise and the Dead Space universe, and in my opinion they did what Capcom has been trying to do for years with the Resident Evil franchise.

Yes, there are a lot of action sequences and?rogue?drills and what not, but the scares are all there and then some. Yes, there are some plot holes (Like why are they only finding out about this frozen planet now? and the ability to stop the markers and Necromorphs? Why in the beginning is Captain Norton all like, ?you?re the only one who can save your girlfriend,? then becomes a complete dick when you do?), but the story as a whole was more engaging to me than?Dead Space 2. In DS2 Isaac was still a guy scared out of his mind, which helped make him crazy. ?In DS3 he?s still a little crazy, but he is no longer scared. Isaac is a war-weary soldier now; he isn?t the scared ill-equipped engineer he was in the first game. ?He?s seen some nasty shit and it changed him. Now when he goes into these situations he knows (to an extent) what to expect, and it shows in his?demeanor?and dismissive attitude towards Ellie?s new boyfriend, Captain Robert Norton, and the story as a whole.

When transitioning between cut-scenes and gameplay it is perfection, and boy does that help add to the crap-your-pants factor that Dead Space is known for. Here is a perfect example: I had just finished fighting through a horde when I open a door and the cut-scene kicks in. Ellie tells me she?s glad I?m okay and Norton just acts like a dick, the way he does throughout the whole game, and the door closes. Now, because there was no typical?transition, I didn?t realize that I had control of Isaac again and before I could get my fingers back to their proper locations on the controller I had two Exploders, a Puker and a Slasher jump out of the wall vents. ?One aspect that does get tiresome is the fetch quests; you spend the majority of the game running around collecting items. To be fair, though, it?s something that can easily be overlooked, because it never detracts from the game.

That is why you can call Dead Space 3 a great game. ?Even with its faults you will still play it for hours on end because all the good far outweighs the bad. I am not going to give away the ending because that would just be rude, and Co-Op will have to wait for another review because this is long enough. Just know that on the single player aspect alone this game is a must have.

Concessions on routes likely to get U.S. Air-AMR off the ground

WASHINGTON/ATLANTA (Reuters) - US Airways and American Airlines are likely to win approval to create the world's biggest carrier, with regulators expected to focus on concessions to preserve competition in Washington, Charlotte, Dallas and other airports where they are dominant, antitrust experts say.

AMR Corp's American and US Airways are in the final stages of negotiating an $11 billion merger and a deal is expected to be announced later this week. If approved, it would mark the third major U.S. airline merger since 2008, raising the specter of higher ticket prices and fewer choices for consumers as a handful of airlines dominate the skies.

To preserve competition, antitrust experts say, the Justice Department is likely to ask for divestitures in US Airways' hub at Washington's Reagan National and Charlotte, N.C., and AMR's hub in Dallas. Outside these areas, the carriers fly different routes for the most part.

"Overlapping routes are bad, and connecting routes are good," said Herbert Hovenkamp, who teaches antitrust at the University of Iowa College of Law.

"If you put these two airlines on a map you're going to see a lot of complementary routes but you're not going to see very many where the two of them fly on the same route," he added.

The Justice Department has rarely challenged an airline merger in recent years. The last one to be challenged was a proposed United-US Airways deal in 2000-2001.

Alison Smith, an antitrust lawyer with McDermott Will & Emery law firm, said regulators are likely to approve an AMR-US Air merger if they agree to sell some routes. "That is a likely scenario," she said.

But she would not completely rule out regulatory opposition, saying a spate of mergers in recent years have left consumers with fewer flight choices. "The fact that the market has changed means that they might take a tougher line," said Smith.

Mergers have helped airlines cut costs and gain more pricing power, boosting industry profitability. The mergers of Delta Air Lines with Northwest, and UAL Corp's United Airlines with Continental Airlines, did push up airfares in some cities, according to a paper done by the non-profit groups American Antitrust Institute and Business Travel Coalition.

Following the Delta purchase of Northwest in 2008, prices went up more than 20 percent for flights between Atlanta and Detroit and more than 10 percent for flights between Minneapolis-St. Paul and Atlanta, all cities which were major hubs for the standalone Delta and Northwest and which saw a sharp drop in competition, according to the study.

The United-Continental deal in 2010 led to price increases of more than 30 percent on flights between Chicago's O'Hare and Houston and between Newark and San Francisco, while prices went up more than 20 percent on flights between Denver and Houston and Denver and Newark, among others, the non-profits found.

HIGHER PRICES?

Vaughn Cordle, partner and airline analyst with Ionosphere Capital LLC, expects airfares to go up in the long run if US Airways combined with American due to less competition.

But he said the likely phase-out of older, less efficient aircraft, plus restructuring benefits achieved by American in bankruptcy, can help the new company lower unit costs without raising fares, especially in a skittish economy.

"It would be a mistake to naturally assume fares are going to go up just because they merge," Cordle said, adding that the new airline will want to keep its fares competitive with rivals so it can fill planes on all its routes.

Still, fares alone do not tell the whole story. Many airlines now charge for baggage, food and other services, and have not dropped fuel surcharges even when jet fuel prices have fallen.

When airlines seek approval for a merger, the Justice Department usually focuses on which "city pairs" would end up with the fewest carriers serving them. It tries to ensure people would still have an adequate number of choices when they fly, and many times require the sale of some routes.

For example, when United merged with Continental in 2010, they had to sell landing slots at Newark, New Jersey to Southwest Airlines .

Routes where US Airways and American overlap include Charlotte, N.C. to Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami, Chicago, and New York's LaGuardia; and Dallas-Fort Worth to Phoenix, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

These and some flights from Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., could be on a list that the Justice Department would require the airlines to divest. What gets divested is usually the subject of behind-the-scenes negotiations.

Potential bidders for those slots include smaller airlines such as JetBlue Airways or Spirit Airlines , analysts say.

SOME UPSIDE

A combined American-US Airways would be better able to upgrade service and expand internationally. The merged company would have revenue of $38.69 billion based on 2012 figures, compared with $37.15 billion for United Continental and $36.67 billion for Delta.

The merger could bring more convenience for consumers on some routes, particularly when switching aircraft. US Airways currently lacks major operations in many of the biggest U.S. cities. American has hubs in Miami, New York, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago and Los Angeles, while US Airways has key operations in Philadelphia, Washington, Phoenix and Charlotte.

"They'll have some great hubs, that will make the airline extremely appealing to both business and leisure travelers, and it will pose a credible challenge to airlines like JetBlue, United and Delta," said Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst with Hudson Crossing.

The main region where the new carrier would be weak is Asia, experts said.

Animal bite force: Size of lunch dictates force of crunch

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Even in the same animal, not all bites are the same. A new study finds that because the force in a muscle depends on how much it is stretched, an animal's bite force depends on the size of what it is biting. The finding has direct implications for ecology and evolution.

Many animals prefer food -- snails, nuts, etc. -- that must be cracked and crushed. Scientists have measured the maximum force of their impressive bites before, but a new study introduces a significant subtlety: bite force depends not only on the size and strength of the eater, but also the size of the eatee. That insight has important implications in the lives of predators and prey.

"Everybody measures bite force as one value," said Nicholas Gidmark, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Brown University and lead author of the new study published Feb. 14, 2013, in Biology Letters. "There's a lot more nuance to it than that."

The nuance comes from a well-understood phenomenon of physiology that had never before been measured in terms of a living animal's bite force: The force a muscle can exert depends on how long that muscle gets preparing for the chomp.

Gidmark and his co-authors hypothesized that the length-force relationship could have culinary consequences. For an individual animal, too much stretch (for a big piece of food) or too little stretch (for a small piece of food) would weaken the bite compared to the stretch required to crush an optimally sized morsel. To test this idea they conducted a series of experiments with black carp, which normally dine on fresh escargot and have conveniently simple jaws.

The stakes are quite high for the carp, which is why the study matters to their evolution as predators.

"You have to break a snail in order to eat it," Gidmark said. "If you don't have enough bite force to break that snail, you get nothing from it."

Crunch time

The scientists started out by training carp of three different sizes to eat not snails but food-stuffed ceramic tubes, which had standardized and easily measured diameters and strength. Gidmark's team had coated some of the tubes with various amounts of polyurethane to create a variety of strengths for each diameter. Tests with a piston-activated crushing device allowed them to measure how much force was required to crack them.

On each fish, the scientists then inserted tiny metal balls into strategic locations on the jaws to act as x-ray markers of jaw position and muscle length. Once the fish recovered from the implants, Gidmark and his colleauges methodically fed each one tubes of different diameters and strength. They recorded X-ray videos of the chewing and noted which tubes the fish could crush and which they could not.

After the feeding trials, the scientists then dissected the fish to make more direct measures of muscle force and muscle length. Keeping the jaw muscles alive, they stimulated them so that they would chomp down. The jaw, meanwhile, was connected to a force transducer that measured the bite.

Finally, Gidmark and his team fed the jaw bone position data into a 3-D animated computer model of the fish jaws. That gave the researchers an even richer set of measures of muscle stretch.

"What the animation lets us do is actually reconstruct the positions of the whole bone relative to the whole skull," Gidmark said. "What that shows us is the whole surface of muscle attachment on the jaw and the whole surface of muscle attachment on the skull and how those move relative to each other."

In all, what they found is that for each fish, bite force depended heavily on tube size and that bite force peaked at an optimal amount of muscle stretch. Too much or too little lengthening led to profound reductions in bite force. A stretch of either about 85 percent or 115 percent of the optimal value led to bite force that was only about half as strong as at the optimal stretch.

The strongest carp bite was about 700 Newtons, or 157 pounds, of force. That allowed the biggest carp to crush strong tubes that happened to be the right size, even when it couldn't crush weaker tubes that were too big or too small.

"Successfully crushed intermediate-sized 'prey' were stronger than larger and smaller 'prey' that were uncrushable, indicating a performance optimum at intermediate prey sizes," the authors wrote.

Ecology and evolution

Were snails in an ecosystem's population to begin growing larger or smaller, in other words, carp could gain or lose the ability to eat them. Small carp might have to stretch too far to crush bigger snails, for example, but larger carp might find that those larger snails had evolved right into their biting sweet spot.

"Depending on how prey is defending itself, whether it is getting big or strong or both, it will have an important impact on those relationships between predators and prey," Gidmark said.

The muscle-length bite-strength relationship likely holds for humans, Gidmark said, but probably very few people depend on crushing hard, co-evolving foods for daily sustenance. Still, Gidmark said he is eager to determine how the findings might extend to other species and their ecology.

"There is variable bite-force with gape," he said. "The implications of that are all over the place. This really sets the ground for a lot of cool ecology and predator-prey interaction studies."

In addition to Gidmark, the study's co-authors are Nicolai Konow, Eric LoPresti, and Elizabeth Brainerd.

Support for the research came from The American Society for Ichthyology and Herpetology, Sigma Xi, the W.M. Keck Foundation, the National Science Foundation (grant: 0840950) and the Bushnell Graduate Research and Education Fund.

Brother: Pope was troubled by butler's revelations

As Catholics worldwide come to terms with the news that Pope Benedict XVI is abdicating his position, becoming the first pope to do so in more than 700 years, Georg Ratzinger, the pope's brother, says the aging process is impacting him "body and soul." NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By Carlo Angerer and Ian Johnston, NBC News

Pope Benedict XVI was troubled by "some great challenges" during his time in office -- including allegations of corruption within the church that were illegally exposed by his former butler and his relationship with a controversial Catholic brotherhood -- the pontiff?s brother said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters in Germany, Georg Ratzinger said the pope was ?doing relatively well? and his announcement Monday that he was going to stand down had not had an effect on his health.

Joseph Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. Look back at his life from childhood through his papacy.

On Monday, Benedict, 85, explained his resignation, saying that the papacy required ?strength of mind and body? and his had deteriorated in recent months. On Tuesday, the Vatican acknowledged for the first time that the pope has had a pacemaker for years and that its battery was replaced a few months ago in secret, Reuters reported.

?But you notice that the aging process impacts body and soul, and especially on his strength," Ratzinger said Tuesday. "And he thinks that with a reduced workload he couldn't carry on this great responsibility, that a younger person is needed to capture the problems of today's time and who has the power to do what has to be done.??

'Indiscretions'
Ratzinger said the pope?s time in office had ?created great challenges for him,? highlighting two particular issues that concerned his brother.

?"Within the church a lot of things happened, which brought up troubles, for example the relationship to the Pius Brotherhood or the irregularities within the Vatican, where the butler had let known indiscretions,? he said.

?These were emotional years, but with God's help and his own commitment, I think he mastered it rather well,? he added.

Ratzinger did not specify the pope?s issues with the Pius Brotherhood, or Society of St. Pius X as the group is formally known.

But in late December, Bishop Bernard Fellay, head of the group, described Jews as ?the enemies of the church? to widespread condemnation from within and outside the Catholic Church. Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, reportedly said it was ?absolutely unacceptable, impossible to define Jews as enemies of the church.?

In October, the pope?s former butler Paolo Gabriele was given an 18-month prison sentence in the so-called ?Vatileaks? case, after he was found guilty of stealing thousands of Vatican documents -- including some of Benedict?s private papers and letters alleging corruption within the church -- while working for the pontiff.

Some of papers were leaked to the media and, in court, Gabriele said he acted out of concern for the church and the pope. The pope pardoned Gabriele just before Christmas.

On a brighter note, Ratzinger said foreign trips had also been ?important? to the pope, enabling him ?to have a pastoral impact, to find friends and to create understanding for the message of the Gospel.?
