Orioles' plane diverted because of smoke in galley

The airplane taking the Baltimore Orioles to the Tampa area on Sunday night had its flight diverted to Jacksonville because of smoke in the forward galley.

Michael Stewart, spokesman for the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, told The Associated Press that the plane was inspected and deemed OK to fly. The Orioles resumed their trip on the same aircraft, leaving Jacksonville International Airport at 10:15 p.m.

Stewart said the plane was a Delta charter with more than 90 people aboard.

Orioles spokeswoman Monica Barlow said the emergency landing "''was done with an abundance of caution, and no time was anyone on the flight in danger."

After the team touched down in Tampa, manager Buck Showalter said during a telephone conference call, "We were in good hands. It was just a precautionary thing just to be on the safe side.

"We had a little something heat up on the plane, and the professionals didn't like what was going on. So just to check it out and be on the safe side, we stopped in Jacksonville. We fixed whatever the problem was, got back on the plane and took off.

"It gave everyone a chance to watch some of the Eagles (football) game, so it worked out good."

The Orioles beat Boston 6-3 in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon. The Orioles later clinched a playoff spot when the Los Angeles Angels lost at Texas in the second game of a doubleheader.

Baltimore, tied with New York for first place in the AL East, opens a series at Tampa Bay on Monday night.

(AP) ? Thousands of conservative Christians gathered Saturday on Independence Mall in Philadelphia to pray for the future of the United States in the weeks before the presidential election.

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins topped a full day of speakers at "The America for Jesus 2012" prayer rally.

Robertson, a former Republican candidate for president, called the election important, but didn't mention either major political party or candidate by name.

"I don't care what the ACLU says or any atheists say. This nation belongs to Jesus, and we're here today to reclaim his sovereignty," said Robertson, 82, who founded the Christian Coalition and Christian Broadcasting Network, and ran for president in 1988.

Organizers plan another prayer rally Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C., two weeks before President Barack Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential election.

Perkins asked the crowd to pray for elected officials including Obama.

"We pray that his eyes will be open to the truth," Perkins said.

A number of event organizers, though, have been vocal critics of the Democratic president.

Steve Strang, the influential Pentecostal publisher of Charisma magazine, which was distributed at the rally, recently wrote in a blog post that America is under threat from a "radical homosexual agenda." He also said Obama "seems to be moving toward some form of European socialism."

And speaker Cindy Jacobs has blamed a mysterious Arkansas bird-kill last year on Obama's repeal of the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell," which allows gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Speakers throughout the day condemned abortion, gay marriage and population control as practiced by Planned Parenthood. Christian rock music filled the historic mall as speakers challenged the crowd to overcome the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and slothfulness.

The rally was held outside of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Pennsylvania is also where evangelist George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening, the 18th-century religious revival that spread through the American colonies.

A group of engineers who previously worked at Apple and NASA created an $11,111 coffee maker that measures the liquid?s heat as it brews to maintain the ?perfect? temperature.

Blossom Coffee?company is the brainchild of coffee fan,?Jeremy Kuempel, and two colleagues. Kuempel is an MIT engineering graduate who previously worked on Apple?s iPad and at electric-car maker Tesla.

The company debuted its first luxury product?at Tech Crunch?s Disrupt Conference earlier this month and is taking pre-orders for about 10 of the Blossom One Limited, which are intended for commercial use and will be available in the spring, the company said.

The Blossom One Limited is about the size of a traditional desktop computer, measuring 7 inches wide. So far, restaurants, cafes and private individuals have inquired about owning one.

When asked if he?s a coffee drinker, Kuempel answered, ?I?m obsessed with it.?

PHOTOS: $11,111 Coffee Maker Available for Pre-Orders

The company wanted to keep coffee as ?front and center? as possible, so the machine?s design only allowed the coffee to touch glass and steel, which are inert materials that won?t react with it.

?We started with the coffee and designed around it,? Kuempel said.

It also has Wi-Fi capability and a camera for a QR scanner. Why a camera?

Kuempel said the company is working with high-end coffee bean providers to one day allow users to scan a QR code on the coffee bag. That way, the coffee maker will know exactly what type of coffee it is and how to brew it.

?This is how crazy we are about coffee, design and service,? Kuempel said.

Blossom Coffee also is hoping to embody its enthusiasm for coffee in its level of customer service.?Built into the price of the coffee maker is a one-year parts and labor warranty that will bring a company representative to your door for any problem.

?We will be there to fix it, and we won?t charge you for it,? Kuempel said.

In addition, the coffee maker has a lifetime defect-free guarantee saying that it is free from errors; or, in other words, that the ?machine will do what we say it will do,? Kuempel said.

Not only that, but the company will work with clients to build a coffee maker that is perfect for them, including the device?s exterior. The company aims to?match whatever wooden material is requested.

Kuempel said, ?A lot of coffee houses feature wood in their design. We will go to lengths to find the exact same wood.?

What about marble or glass?

?We can?t promise it, but we will investigate it? and do whatever we can,? he said.

Organ Practice Tips: How to Create Both Feet Equally in Pedal ...

Perhaps you have observed the feet of movie organists in performance? They?re in a position to play the notes with their left foot while pushing numerous toe men for registration improvements and swell boxes. All their pedal strategy is dependent upon the left foot. But, if where both feet approach is necessary theater organist really wants to enjoy conventional wood music, he or she will discover both feet to be used by it extremely hard in the performance. In this article, I will provide the methods which will help theater organists to develop both feet approach on the wood. Beginners at the body with no pedal playing knowledge may additionally find this article helpful.First of all, we?ve to realize that any ability, including pedal playing, must certanly be received through regular and patient exercise. Irrespective of how great you might be at the theater organ, when it involves classical pedal playing, it?s just plain too complicated in the beginning. Do not despair, but, and recognize that you will need certainly to get the exact same methods as you?d in theater organ playing.Majority of music created for enclosed quiet films on theater organs demands frequent subscription and color changes to copy different orchestral instruments and different feelings of video episodes. In doing such music, the organist needs to modify enrollment both by forcing pistons with the thumb or use the foot men with the foot. All of the time, since both of your hands are especially active, theatre organists use the right foot for foot studs and keep just the left foot for pedal enjoying. As a result, they?ve a virtuoso remaining foot process but underdeveloped right foot. What this implies is that when such organists desire to study classical organ arsenal, they?ve to start with some easy pedal exercises to be able to achieve the same potential with the right foot gradually.Do not start practicing pedal machines from the beginning. Though pedal machines are among the most readily useful approaches to develop a great pedal technique at the organ, they are obviously too hard for the novice organist (and for theater organist as well). Pedal scales are too higher level as you need to use toe-heel technique regularly. As that is too complex at first, start with some simple exercises that may maybe not require using pumps in the beginning.Choose alternative bottom exercises first. The pedal exercises that theater organists can exercise are different bottom exercises. Which means they require using left and right feet only in alternation. For instance, play ascending and descending sequences of thirds. Such workout may possibly look like this: D Elizabeth Deborah F Elizabeth H Y A G N A C etc., or C A W G A Y G E F N Elizabeth C Deborah N etc. Furthermore, play descending and ascending lines of fourths: D F D Gary E A Y B etc., or D H W F An Elizabeth G N F D etc. Exercises in fifths will also be great for the beginning: D G D An E B F H etc. or H Y W Elizabeth A Deborah G C etc.Play these exercises legato with different toes in a slow tempo. Different exercises can be chosen by you using pumps as well, because they become easy. Recall, that the progress of the correct pedal strategy requires patient and regular practice. As everything in organ playing, both feet method takes some time to master however it is worth the effort as the entire new dimension of organ music can open up before you.

Deer disease confirmed in 3 Wisconsin counties - TwinCities.com

MADISON, Wis. -- A deer-killing disease is spreading in southern Wisconsin.

Wisconsin wildlife officials confirm that samples from deer found dead in Dane, Sauk and Waukesha counties have tested positive for epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD.

Residents have contacted the Department of Natural Resources about seeing small groups of dead deer in southern Wisconsin. EHD is now confirmed in five Wisconsin counties -- Columbia, Rock, Sauk, Dane and Waukesha counties.

Additional tests of deer from Columbia, Iowa, Jefferson and Marquette counties are pending. Results are expected within the next couple of weeks.

EHD is transmitted by biting midges. The disease causes internal bleeding that can kill infected animals within a few days.

The last EHD observation in Wisconsin was in 2002 in Iowa County, where 14 deer died from the virus.

No-Sweat Tips For Commercial Real Estate Success | Eric Chua - First

There are both positive and negative aspects of commercial real estate. You could earn a lot of money and also take the risk of losing it all. Try to choose wisely when considering purchasing a property, and thinking about how to fund it. This article is here to help you make the wise choices that are required to succeed.

Finding motivated sellers is a big plus in this business. A seller who is ready to sell for less than the market prices deserves your attention. Until you locate a great deal, nothing moves one way or the other when it comes to real estate. Once you identify a great deal, it is usually offered by a seller who is eager and very motivated to sell.

Real Estate

TIP! Think about long-term economic conditions before investing in real estate. Be prepared for large-scale inflation during the next couple of years.

When going into commercial real estate deals, make sure that you are using a top grade lawyer who goes over everything side by side with you. If something horrible happens when you are dealing with real estate, the right attorney can make a world of difference.

Don?t overwhelm yourself trying to work on several types of investments at once. Put all of your attention on one investment until it?s complete. Concentrate on one particular type of commercial real estate at any given time, whether it be office blocks or retail space, for example. Every category expects and even needs your complete and undistracted focus. It is a lot better to master one type of investment that to be mediocre with many.

If you are taking out a commercial loan, you must pay for the appraisal yourself. The bank won?t let you make use of it later. Protect yourself from this problem and get the appraisal done on your own dime.

TIP! You might have to make improvements to your space before you can use it. It may simply be cosmetic issues that need addressing, such as a fresh coat of paint or some furniture rearrangement.

Negotiate, whether you?re the seller or the buyer. Make your voice heard and strive for fair market value pricing.

Commercial real estate has many brokers to offer. There are agents who only represent tenants and there are full-service brokers who work with both tenants and landlords. It might be more beneficial to hire a broker who works only with tenants, as he has more experience working with those searching for a property.

Get the credentials of any person who will be doing an inspection on a property you are trying to buy. Those who work in pest removal should be inspected closely, as they are often not accredited. This will avoid bigger problems in the post-sale.

TIP! Learn all things from the firm you?re dealing with including how they measure results. Discover how they know the space you require, how they interpret property selection criteria, how they negotiate and the other details that affect you.

Always keep tenants, otherwise, your commercial property will end up costing you money instead of making you money. If there is still open space, it will be incumbent upon you to pay for maintenance. You need to ask yourself why properties are not getting rented and fix any issues you discover.

Maintaining a regularly updated blog can make you appear more authoritative. This helps to attract potential buyers if you have something for sale or lease.

In order to determine whether or not the real estate broker you?re working with is right for you, discuss their definitions of successes and failures. Also inquire how they personally measure their results. Look for online ratings or complaints. Do not partner up with a broker who is completely the opposite to you in beliefs and the way matters are addressed.

TIP! Always go through the disclosures of an agent before hiring him or her. Try to beware of dual agency.

Square Footage

Be sure about the correct square footage available. Keep in mind, there is a difference between total square feet and the number of square feet which actually constitute usable space for your business. Total square feet encompasses the entire footprint of the structure, even that space that is actually take up by walls and other space that is unusable in terms of open floor space. The best strategy is to ask for both figures, to ask for the square footage and the usable square footage.

At first, you may be required to spend a significant amount of time on a commercial investment. It will take time to find a lucrative opportunity, and after purchasing a property, it may need repairs or remodeling. Don?t abandon your investments because they are eating into your personal time. You will be rewarded later.

TIP! Take digital pictures of the place. Each photograph should clearly depict the point of contention, whether that happens to be a stain, hole or other problem.

It is important to have a good understanding of your business? requirements prior to searching for a commercial property. It?s important to know the kind of office you will use. If you?re growing a company, buy more space than you currently need to save money before the market prices rise again.

Be wary of fluctuating interest rates, as these can greatly affect not only your initial financing, but also your long-term investment. A bad economy can cause rates to rise and fall quickly, and investors find themselves unable to predict these tendencies. When you are shopping for commercial property, make sure you consider the long term.

Commercial Real Estate

TIP! If you are presented with a standard commercial lease form, do not sign it immediately. Take your time.

As stated earlier, commercial real estate will not provide income without effort. It takes a lot of time and effort?not to mention a sizable down payment?to succeed in the commercial real estate market. That, though, is still not a guarantee that you will make money, and you could possibly still lose

(AP) ? The road to heaven is paved with more than good intentions for Germany's 24 million Catholics. If they don't pay their religious taxes, they will be denied sacraments, including weddings, baptisms and funerals.

A decree issued last week by the country's bishops cast a spotlight on the longstanding practice in Germany and a handful of other European countries in which governments tax registered believers and then hand over the money to the religious institutions.

In Germany, the surcharge for Catholics, Protestants and Jews is a surcharge of up to nine percent on their income tax bills ? or about ?56 ($72) a month for a single person earning a pre-tax monthly salary of about ?3,500 ($4,500).

For religious institutions, struggling to maintain their congregations in a secular society where the Protestant Reformation began 500 years ago, the tax revenues are vital.

The Catholic Church in Germany receives about ?5 billion ($6.5 billion) annually from the surcharge. For Protestants, the total is just above ?4 billion ($5.2 billion). Donations, in turn, represent a far smaller share of the churches' income than in the United States.

With rising prices and economic uncertainty, however, more and more Catholics and Protestants are opting to save their money and declare to tax authorities they are no longer church members, even if they still consider themselves believers.

"I quit the church already in 2007," Manfred Gonschor, a Munich-based IT-consultant, said. "It was when I got a bonus payment and realized that I could have paid myself a nice holiday alone on the amount of church tax that I was paying on it."

Gonschor added he was also "really fed up with the institution and its failures."

Such defections have hit the Catholic Church especially hard ? it has lost about 181,000 tax-paying members in 2010 and 126,000 a year later, according to official figures. Protestants, who number about 24 million nationwide, lost 145,000 registered members in Germany in 2010, the most recent year from which figures are available.

But the figures include some people who still want to baptize their children, take communion on major religious holidays, marry in a religious ceremony and receive Christian burials.

The group We are Church, which claims to represent tens of thousands of grassroots Catholics, said many Germans stop paying the tax because they disagree with the church's policies or simply want to save money ? not because they have lost their faith.

"I haven't quit because I still think that I might want to get married in a church one day, even though I know that's absurd," said Anna Ainsley, a 31-old-year banker and a Protestant from Frankfurt. "But when I see my tax declaration, then I think every year that I should finally quit."

Those are the people that Germany's Catholic bishops had in mind when they decreed on Sept. 20 that stopping the payment of religious taxes was "a serious lapse" and those who did so would then be excluded from a range of church activities.

"This decree makes clear that one cannot partly leave the Church," the bishops said in a statement. "It is not possible to separate the spiritual community of the Church from the institutional Church."

Wavering Catholics will now be sent letters reminding them of the consequences of avoiding the church tax, including losing access to all sacraments.

"Maybe you haven't considered the consequences of your decision and would like to reverse this step," a draft of the letter states.

Protestants have taken a less stern position, saying non-taxpayers are still welcome to attend services and take communion. But becoming a godparent, getting married in a church or taking a job in church-affiliated institutions such as hospitals or kindergartens are off-limits to those who stop paying their taxes.

Switzerland and Austria also tax Catholic and Protestant church members. In Denmark, the State Lutheran church collects a tax from its members. Members of Sweden's Lutheran Church pay around 1 percent of their income, collected by the national tax authorities, just as in Finland.

In Italy, tax-payers have the choice of diverting a small part of their income taxes to religious institutions, including the Catholic Church and the country's Jewish community, but the contribution is voluntary.

In none of those countries have the churches taken such a firm stand against dropouts.

So far German courts have stood by the bishops' decision. This week the country's top administrative court threw out a lawsuit against the archdiocese of Freiburg by retired theologian Hartmut Zapp, who has spent years fighting the Catholic Church over the tax.

Zapp argued that a Catholic should be free to stop paying but remain a member of the spiritual community and that his religious beliefs could not possibly be tied to a tax payment.

The archdiocese responded in a statement that "those who lack solidarity bid farewell to the community of believers."

The tax issue presents moral and ethical dilemmas to millions of German believers, even dividing couples.

Sonja Trott, a 34-year-old teacher from Munich, said she quit the Catholic Church 15 years ago because she no longer believed in its teachings.

"Now I'd like to convince my husband that he also should quit, that would save us a lot of money," she said.

But her husband, Christoph, a sales executive, says he cannot imagine refusing to pay on moral grounds because it would seem like a betrayal of his faith. "I don't like paying it, but I do because I fear the step of quitting the church."

He would prefer to donate part of the money to charities "but well, in Germany the payment determines whether I'm allowed to consider myself a Catholic or not."

For other Germans, it's unethical to stop paying the tax but continue to use the church when it suits them.

Christine Solf, a Munich-based consultant, says she doesn't attend services regularly but appreciates the church's charitable work. For her, church membership is also a family tradition.

"I know people who quit for financial reasons but then still want their children to be baptized. That's not OK in my opinion," she said.

Sony Xperia tipo and tipo dual reach the US in unlocked form, give Americans a taste of dual SIMs

Sony Xperia tipo hands-on

Few of us who live outside of Asia or Eastern Europe know the potential convenience of a dual SIM phone. Own one and you can globetrot, or else keep separate home and work lines without the bulk of an extra device in the pocket. Sony is gambling that enough Americans have that multi-line desire by selling the Xperia tipo dual and its regular, single-SIM counterpart in the US as unlocked GSM models. Neither of the Android 4.0 phones is what we'd call a powerhouse with the same 3.5-inch screen, 3.2-megapixel camera and 800MHz Snapdragon inside, but both can latch on to HSPA 3G on AT&T, refarmed T-Mobile coverage and 2100MHz carriers abroad, even if the single-SIM tipo curiously has 900MHz 3G support that the tipo dual lacks. It's undoubtedly price that Sony is counting on more than anything: at respective contract-free prices of $180 and $190 for the tipo and tipo dual, the pair of Xperias may be sold most often as travel-only phones for the jet set.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) ? Gov. Jerry Brown rode to Google headquarters in a self-driving Toyota Prius before signing legislation Tuesday that will pave the way for driverless cars in California.

The bill by Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla will establish safety and performance regulations to test and operate autonomous vehicles on state roads and highways.

"Today we're looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow's reality ? the self-driving car," Brown said. "Anyone who gets inside a car and finds out the car is driving will be a little skittish, but they'll get over it."

Google Inc. has been developing autonomous car technology and lobbying for the regulations. The company's fleet of a dozen computer-controlled vehicles has logged more than 300,000 miles of self-driving without an accident, according to Google.

"I think the self-driving car can really dramatically improve the quality of life for everyone," Google co-founder Sergey Brin said.

Autonomous cars can make roads safer, free commuters from the drudgery of driving, reduce congestion and provide transport to people who can't drive themselves, such as the blind, disabled, elderly and intoxicated, Brin said.

"I expect that self-driving cars will be far safer than human-driven cars," Brin said.

Brin predicted that autonomous vehicles will be commercially available within a decade. He said Google has no plans to produce its own cars, but instead plans to partner with the automobile industry to develop autonomous vehicles.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers expressed concern that California is moving too quickly to embrace self-driving cars and needs to first sort out liability issues.

"Unfortunately this legislation lacks any provision protecting an automaker whose car is converted to an autonomous operation vehicle without the consent or even knowledge of that auto manufacturer," the trade group said in a statement.

Autonomous cars use computers, sensors and other technology to operate independently, but a human driver can override the autopilot function and take control of the vehicle at any time.

With smartphone-wielding drivers more distracted than ever, backers say robotic vehicles have the potential to significantly reduce collisions and traffic fatalities, noting that nearly all car accidents are a result of human error.

The legislation requires the California Department of Motor Vehicles to draft regulations for autonomous vehicles by Jan. 1, 2015. Currently, state law doesn't mention self-driving cars because the technology is so new.

The regulations would allow vehicles to operate autonomously, but a licensed driver would still need to sit behind the wheel to serve as a backup operator in case of emergency.

The legislation also is aimed at keeping California at the forefront of the autonomous car industry since Stanford University and Silicon Valley companies have been working on the technology for years.

In February, Nevada became the first U.S. state to approve regulations spelling out requirements for companies to test driverless cars on that state's roads.

Carmakers such as Audi AG, BMW AG, Ford Motor Co. and Volvo have been working on autonomous car technology for years.

In recent years, automakers also have been introducing autonomous functions such as self-parking, lane departure warnings and adaptive cruise-control, which allows vehicles to automatically accelerate and decelerate with the flow of traffic.

Outside a cafe in Mountain View, customers said they looked forward to a day when their cars could drive themselves, as long as they could do it safely.

"It would make our streets safer," said Barrett Howard, 33, an auto technician. "We wouldn't have to worry about people texting or getting sidetracked. The computer will take over, and it will make life easier."

Abraham Eshel, a retired mechanical engineer who has vision problems, said self-driving cars would make his life easier, too.

"If I could tell my car, 'OK, you take over when it's dark,' and I don't have to worry about it, that would be fantastic," said Eshel, who lives in nearby Los Altos. "It's a good idea. Why not make progress if it's possible?"
