Online Shopping & Payments

We all enjoy the convenience of paying for our things online, who doesn't? It's quick, effective and efficient, all one needs to do is enter their card details and voil?! However, it's not just the consumer who enjoys this easy luxury, businesses too would much rather have a steady cash flow where, money is coming in instantly rather than having wait to days or even weeks for cheques or bank transfers to clear and this couldn't be more vital for the survival for businesses today as credit is becoming increasingly limited. There are a number of things a company must take into consideration before accepting card payments online. These are shown below.

Visa Merchant Agent

By 31 December 2012, if merchants and mercahant agents want to continue processing Visa credit and debit cards, then they must meet Visa's adequate levels of data security and register their services online. Visa

have published a list of certified merchants and merchant agents that want to continue to process Visa card payments online. The purpose of this list is to improve merchant and service provider data risk management.

PCI DSS

Online security and data protection is key when buying/selling online. PCI DSS is a set of comprehensive requirements for enchancing payment account data security. These standards were developed by the founding payment brands of the PCI security standards council to help improve card security.

Merchant ID

Merchant accounts are accounts which are set up for a merchant where you will be assigned a merchant ID. Using this merchant ID, your business will be identified by the banks so that you are able to accept card payments online. Typically, the banks include charges for set up, monthly or annual fees and a monthly rental price for the rental of a terminal. If you want to set up a web site to accept card payments you will find that the acquiring banks will not accept any information coming from you via the Internet. The banks will only accept information from a web site which has been processed by an approved Payment Service Provider (PSP).

3D Secure

3D secure stands for 3 domain secure and there are three parties involved in this process which are:

  • The vendor

  • The acquiring bank

  • Visa & Mastercard

Shopping on the internet is now such a convenient experience for everyone especially Visa cardholders and merchants. As online shopping continues to grow, there are more concerns about the potential for fraudulent use of cards online. 3D secure was developed by Visa to improve the security of payments on the internet. It allows the authentication of cardholders by their issuers. The benefits of having 3d secure as a cardholder when buying online is that it gives the cutomer an increased confidence of buying online and their details being secure, there is no special software needed to use this and finally it is easy to use. Benefits for the merchant is that it can dramatically reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions and there could be a decrease in disputed transactions.

SSL Certification

An SSL certificate is a protocol and in order to use the SSL protocol, companies need an SSL certificate. An SSL certificate is a small file that binds a cryptogrpahic key to your companies details. When an SSL certificate is installed on your server, it activates a padlock that you may have seen previously when buying online to allow a secure connection from the server to the browser.

Adding Value to Your Home Through Home Improvement

As most people in the Virginia area know, a home is one of the biggest investments a person can make. Not only does it require solid financial planning to acquire, but it also demands regular maintenance to retain at least its original value. And in addition to regular maintenance, upgrades and improvements done with a Virginia contractor can make sure it not only retains its value but possibly even increase in value.

There are a number of upgrades and home repair remodeling improvements a homeowner can make to their home to help keep the value high. From top to bottom, there are features that can be upgraded or added to a home to make it attractive to potential buyers should the original homeowner decided to sell it. By consulting a home remodeling service, a homeowner can determine which improvements can do the most for the value of their home.

A professional Virginia contractor can help a homeowner decide which improvements are necessary and which are good features to add. For instance, a Virginia contractor may suggest that certain repairs or material upgrades be made to a roof to keep it good condition to provide protection to your home. Meanwhile, an upgrade of the look and appliances in your kitchen may not be necessary, but can add value to your home.

Other area in your home where improvement and upgrades can be made include doors, windows, siding, heating and cooling systems, gutters and drainage systems and porches and decks.

Consult with a Virginia contractor to find out what home repair, remodeling and improvements you can make to ensure that the value of your home not only is maintained but possibly increases. Your home is a major investment and like any investment it should be monitored and maintained to keep it from losing its initial value.

Obama: Euro crisis could affect my re-election

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is acknowledging that Europe's economic situation could have a spillover effect on his own re-election prospects.

As he wrapped up the Group of 20 economic summit of world leaders, Obama expressed confidence in Europe's ability to right its own financial ship. He said he was hopeful that voters would validate his own efforts come November if he stayed focused on strengthening both the U.S. and world economies and creating more jobs at home.

"I've consistently believed that if we take the right policy steps, if we're doing the right thing, then the politics will follow, and my mind hasn't changed on that," the president said a news conference in this Mexican resort Tuesday at the close of what is expected to be his last foreign trip before the November election.

The president returned early Wednesday to Washington, where a tough re-election fight and a shaky economy awaited him.

Obama said he was encouraged that European leaders understood the depth of their continent's economic problems and were working in unison to address it.

"Even if they cannot achieve all of it in one fell swoop, I think if people have a sense of where they are going, that can provide confidence and break the fever," Obama said.

Locked in a difficult campaign, Obama acknowledged he couldn't control the pace of action in Europe despite the repercussions the continent's debt crisis could have on the U.S. economy and his own re-election prospects. The U.S. economy is undergoing a slow recovery amid a slump in hiring and indications that the housing market is healing. Those mixed signals have muddled Obama's prospects for a second term as GOP challenger Mitt Romney mounts a campaign singularly focused on the state of the U.S. economy.

Obama also was frank in laying out the disagreement among the United States, Russia and China over whether Syrian President Bashar Assad can remain as leader of Russia's main Mideast ally. He blamed wholesale slaughter of civilians squarely on Assad's government and said while the U.S. and Russia, in particular, both fear all-out civil war in Syria, they remain divided about exactly what to do next.

Obama met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of meetings at the posh seaside resort. China and Russia have close ties to Syria and have vetoed two U.N. resolutions that mentioned the threat of sanctions against Assad's regime.

The bloodshed in Syria and the economic crisis in Europe dominated the discussions at the gathering of the world's leading and developing nations.

Obama told reporters that in two days of intensive meetings, Europe's leaders showed a "heightened sense of urgency."

The president maintained that Europe had the capacity to solve the crisis on its own, indicating the U.S., still battling its own economic woes, would not be offering any financial pledges to help its international partners.

Still, Obama recognized the challenge European nations faced because each country has to separately approve any action to stabilize the fiscal union.

Mindful of his audience of voters in the U.S., Obama said, "The best thing the United States can do is to create jobs and growth in the short term even as we continue to put our fiscal house in order over the long term."

Obama urged Congress to focus on steps it could take to boost job creation and economic growth, pitching legislation he proposed months ago that has little chance of garnering Republican support in an election year.

All sides at the G-20 summit seemed intent on sending confident signals to jittery markets and unhappy electorates.

Underscoring the stakes, Obama broke from the main summit Tuesday for a brief meeting with leaders from Britain, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and the European Union.

Despite the words of unity, European leaders showed signs that they have heard enough about their troubles, particularly from Americans. Memories linger of the 2008 financial crash that was born in the United States and destroyed jobs and wealth.

"The eurozone has a serious problem, but it is certainly not the only imbalance in the world economy," Italian Prime Minster Mario Monti said. He said the United States' own financial problems were mentioned in G-20 talks "by almost everybody, including President Obama."

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso took an aggressive tone with reporters Monday, also pointing some blame at North America and saying, "Frankly, we are not coming here to receive lessons in terms of democracy."

HBT: Cain sets new standard of perfection

With his 125-pitch gem against the Astros on Wednesday night, Matt Cain entered the history books, throwing the 20th perfect game since 1900 and 22nd in major league history.

Cain struck out 14 in the contest, matching Sandy Koufax?s total on Sept. 9, 1965 for the highest strikeout total in a perfect game.

That gave him a game score of 101, which is tied for the second highest in major league history for a pitcher in a nine-inning game. Of course, Koufax, who had the same line, matched him there, as did Nolan Ryan in his 16-strikeout no-hitter in 1991. The top game score in a nine-inning game is 105, from Kerry Wood?s 20-strikeout, one-hitter against the Astros in 1998.

Making Cain?s feat more impressive:

- The Giants exploded for 10 runs in the game, resulting in some lengthy waits for Cain in the third and fourth innings.

- The wind was blowing out at AT&T Park for the second night in a row. The Giants had gone 16 straight home games without a homer before hitting two on Tuesday night. Tonight, they hit three homers. The Astros wouldn?t have necessarily needed to get all of one to ruin the perfect game and the shutout bid in one swing. Chris Snyder almost spoiled things in the sixth, only to come up a bit short.

- He got to face opposing pitcher J.A. Happ just once, and position players accounted for 26 of the Astros? 27 plate appearances tonight. While the Astros aren?t exactly known for having a high-powered offense, they entered the night ranked eighth in runs scored in the NL.

Cain?s perfect game was the first in the Giants? long history. The 14 strikeouts was a new career high for him.

?I can?t thank [catcher] Buster [Posey] enough,? Cain told MLB.com?s Chris Haft. ?I didn?t even question him once. What he was calling, I was going to throw whatever he wanted and I was going to let him go. Buster did an unbelievable job back there. That was tremendous.?

World's Strangest Marriages & Relationships (9 pics) ~ My X New 's

he woman who married the Eiffel Tower

?Erika La Tour Eiffel, 37, a former soldier who lives in San Francisco, has been in love with objects before. Her first infatuation was with Lance, a bow that helped her to become a world-class archer, she is fond of the Berlin Wall and she claims to have a physical relationship with a piece of fence she keeps in her bedroom. But it is the Eiffel Tower she has pledged to love, honour and obey in an intimate ceremony attended by a handful of friends. She has changed her name legally to reflect the bond.

The man who married himself

?39-year-old Liu Ye from Zhuhai city, China, has married himself in front of more than 100 guests at a traditional courtyard. He, and the foam cut-out of himself in a red bridal dress, were attended by one bridesmaid and one groomsman. On the way out he bowed to the ancestors and to senior guests in return for blessings. Lui denies being gay but says he could be "a bit narcissistic" according to local media reports. "There are many reasons for marrying myself, but mainly to express my dissatisfaction with reality," Lui said. "This marriage makes me whole again. My definition of marriage is different from others."

The Swedish woman who has been married to the Berlin Wall for over 30 years

?Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer, 54, whose surname means Berlin Wall in German, wed the concrete structure in 1979 after being diagnosed with a condition called Objectum-Sexuality. Mrs Berliner-Mauer, whose fetish is said to have its roots in childhood, claimed she fell in love with the structure when she first saw it on television when she was seven. She began collecting "his" pictures and saving up for visits. On her sixth trip in 1979 they tied the knot before a handful of guests. While she remains a virgin with humans, she insists she has a full, loving relationship with the wall. While the rest of mankind rejoiced when the Wall, erected by the Soviets in 1961 to halt an exodus from East to West Berlin, was largely torn down in 1989, its "wife" was horrified. She's never been back and now keeps models depicting "his" former glory.

The Japanese man who married a character from Nintendo DS video game

?In November, a Japanese man known as Sal9000 married Nene Anegasaki from the Nintendo DS video game ?Love Plus,? a virtual dating game. He actually had a real ceremony in Guam, where apparently it's legal to marry not only inanimate but imaginary objects. His wife currently lives in the Nintendo DSi LL/XL, which is a giant version of the DS, and visitors at the wedding watched a slide show and saw the happy groom kiss his wife. Eek, his poor wife is trapped in a video game and in a marriage she couldn't possibly be aware of.

The woman who is about to get married to a fairground ride

??Amy Wolfe is a confident 32-year-old American who lives in New York State. She has been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, and has been in relationships with models of spaceships, the Twin Towers, a church organ and a banister, though her main lover ? since OS people believe in polygamy ? is a fairground ride called 1001 Nacht, located at Knoebels, an amusement park in Pennsylvania (thanks, Adrienne and Dakota). She now plans to marry the magic carpet. This follows a "courtship" of 3,000 rides over ten years. She will change her surname to Weber after the manufacturer of the ride she travels 160 miles to visit 10 times per year. Wolfe even sleeps with a picture of the ride on her ceiling and carries its spare nuts and bolts around to feel closer to it. She claims to believe they share a fulfilling physical and spiritual relationship and does not get jealous when other people ride it. :)

The woman who married her dead ex boyfriend

?Magali Jaskiewicz and Jonathan George had planned to wed at their local town hall in November 2008, but he was killed just two days before the ceremony in a motorcycle accident. Ms Jaskiewitz, 32, used a little-known section of the French civil code that allows posthumous marriages if all the formalities for the wedding were completed before one of the partners died, including the setting of a date. She proved to officials that she and Mr George had been living together since 2004 and that they shared a bank account. She also provided a photo of the wedding dress she had bought to wear to their wedding. According to French interior ministry officials, around ten posthumous marriages are carried out each year in France.

The man who married a pillow

?True love can take many forms. In this case, it has taken the form of a Korean man falling in love with, and eventually marrying, a large pillow with a picture of a woman on it. Lee Jin-gyu fell for his ?dakimakura' ? a kind of large, huggable pillow from Japan, often with a picture of a popular anime character printed on the side. In Lee's case, his beloved pillow has an image of Fate Testarossa, from the ?magical girl' anime series Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. Now the 28-year-old otaku (a Japanese term that roughly translates to somewhere between ?obsessive' and ?nerd') has wed the pillow in a special ceremony, after fitting it out with a wedding dress for the service in front of a local priest. Their nuptials were eagerly chronicled by the local media.?

The woman who married a snake

?A woman, who claimed to have fallen in love with a snake got married to the reptile as per Hindu rituals at Atala village of Orissa's Khurda district. The unusual marriage took place in 2006 with over 2,000 people taking out a procession to celebrate the event. Attired in a silk saree, 30 year-old Bimbala Das was seen sitting for around one hour as priests chanted mantras to complete the ritual. The snake which lived in an ant hill near her home, however, was not around and a brass replica of a serpent was kept by the side of the woman instead. Bimbala said: "Though snakes cannot speak nor understand, we communicate in a peculiar way. Whenever I put milk near the ant hill where the Cobra lives, it (the snake) always comes out to drink." When Bimbala disclosed her idea of marrying a snake, villagers reportedly appreciated it saying the marriage will bring good fortune to the area. They also came forward to offer a grand feast for those who came to attend the marriage.

The woman who is in a relationship with Jake, a hi-fi system

?Emma (not her real name), 43, the only British member of OS (objectum sexual) community, suffers from Asperger syndrome ? a condition which seems to be shared by around half of OS people. Asperger sufferers often have difficulties forming relationships with other people, and Emma's fixations are radios and hi-fis. When I met her, she was in love with a hi-fi system which she called Jake. Jake, she says, is "solid, reliable and beautiful". She repairs "him" when he goes wrong, and "makes love" to him on average twice a day. Aside from her electricals, Emma leads a solitary existence. "I would like to meet more people and to have friends," she says, "but I just think it is too difficult now. I am scared they will reject me."

Will the United Nations' legacy in Haiti be all about scandal?

The accomplishments of the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti have been overshadowed by scandals, from a cholera outbreak to sexual abuse cases. How will this affect future missions?

By Kathie Klarreich,?Correspondent / June 13, 2012

When the United Nations deployed peacekeepers to Haiti in 2004, its troops were charged with restoring order following the tumultuous departure of then-president Jean Bertrand Aristide. Their presence brought a much-needed calm after months of violence and political unrest. In the years that followed, they provided security for two democratic elections and, after Haiti?s devastating 2010 earthquake, pitched in with recovery and reconstruction efforts.

But that?s not the only legacy MINUSTAH, as the peacekeeping mission is referred to here, has created. Once popular, the UN mission now is viewed by many as a poor use of money and an unnecessary presence ? a result in part of numerous scandals that have rocked the mission in recent years. From accusations of sexual abuse of two boys, ages 14 and 18, to the deadly cholera epidemic, peacekeepers are being blamed for impeding the? path to a sustainable state.

?[MINUSTAH] came to help us,? says Arsene Dieujuste, a lawyer representing the 14-year-old boy. ?But they ended up violating our human rights. Someone has to make this as right as possible, even though it will never be right again.?

'What happened is ying and yang'

When MINUSTAH set up in Haiti in 2004, the peacekeepers tackled rogue officers from the defunct military and secured access to parts of the capital that had been off limits due to gang monopolies. When successive storms left thousands homeless in 2007 and 2008, the mission responded by delivering tangible goods and services to people and the government of Haiti. This was also true after the 2010 earthquake, which took the lives of over 200,000 people, including 96 UN peacekeepers.

?MINUSTAH came in and did the job that was asked, which was restore stability into the country,? said Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe. ?The initial mission has been achieved. We?ve now adjusted the scope of the work to different infrastructure development projects ? road maintenance, bridges, clearing of canals, and assisting in strengthening the police.?

Despite their accomplishments, the UN spokesperson in Haiti, Silvie Van den Wildenberg, says she can?t mention the mission without someone asking her about cholera or the cases of abuse.

In Uruguay, four marines are currently on trial for sexually abusing an 18-year-old Haitian boy last year while they were posted in Port Salud. The teenager and his family were forced to leave their seaside home after the incident went viral on the Internet. It had been captured on a mobile phone by the Uruguayan peacekeepers themselves.

Earlier this year, three Pakistani peacekeepers were found guilty of raping a mentally challenged 14-year-old boy in the western town of Gonaives. The boy is now a ward of the state. A man accused of helping the Pakistanis cover up their involvement is also in prison. Two other cases of sexual abuse by MINUSTAH peacekeepers are pending.

The mission, called Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small Explorer (GEMS), was running significantly over budget, said Paul Hertz, director of NASA's Astrophysics Division, during a phone call to reporters today.

"The?GEMS project?was initiated under a very well-defined cost cap," Hertz said. "As they approached their confirmation review, it was clear they would not be able to complete it within their cost cap. NASA made the very difficult decision not to confirm GEMS into the implementation phase."

The mission team had almost completed the design stage of the project and was nearing the point where hardware for the mission would begin to be built. No working instruments were yet constructed, Hertz said. [NASA's 2013 Budget: What Will It Buy?]

The project was selected as a "small explorer" class mission, with a firm cost limit of $105 million, not including the price of launching the spacecraft. NASA recently commissioned an independent review of GEMS' budget, and found that the ultimate price tag for the spacecraft was likely to be 20 to 30 percent over budget.

Because of the cost overrun, NASA decided to pull the plug on GEMS last month. On June 5, the GEMS team, led by principal investigator Jean Swank of the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., appealed the decision and submitted documents to show they had identified new areas of cost savings.

However, NASA was not swayed.

The space agency will now have to pay an estimated $13 million in close-out costs to cancel the mission, including contract cancelation fees to?Orbital Sciences Corp. and other companies that were hired to built the spacecraft.

GEMS was to use three telescopes to capture the bent X-ray light from extremely dense objects such as black holes, neutron stars and stellar remnants. The mission would have launched no earlier than 2014 and lasted two years.

"Although there aren't any other projects in the queue right now to measure polarized X-ray sources, there are a number of observatories which can address the science questions from different areas," including NASA's?NuSTAR space mission, due to launch June 13, Hertz said.

The main factor behind the cost overrun was the trickiness of developing the technology needed for the mission, he said.

"The instrument technology was more difficult and took longer than they had originally estimated," Hertz said. "That delayed their ability to get started on the rest of their schedule."

Browse like Bond: Use any PC without a trace

5 hrs.

If James Bond logs on to a computer, he doesn't want to leave a bunch of files, cookies, or his IP address out there for someone to find. It might seem extreme, but sometimes it's a good idea to take the same precautions yourself.

In this post, we'll walk through how to use a USB stick or DVD to anonymize, encrypt and hide everything you do on a computer no matter where you are. When we say "browse without leaving a trace", we truly mean it. Using the Linux-based, live-boot operating system Tails (The Amnesiac Incognito Live System), you can use any computer anywhere without anyone knowing you were ever on it.?

Tails is a portable operating system with all the security bells and whistles you'll ever need already installed on it. You can install Tails on one of your many dust-gathering USB drives or a DVD. We'll show you how to set up your own portable boot disc in the second section, but let's start by taking a look at what you get with Tails.

What Tails Is and What's Packed Into It
The magic of Tails is that you don't have to do a lick of work: once you create your boot disc you'll have a completely anonymous, totally private operating system preloaded with all the software you (or James Bond) would need. What's packed into it? Let's take a look.

The Software Packed Directly into Tails
Once you create your Tails boot disc, you'll be ready to reboot your computer into an encrypted and private operating system preloaded with all the software you'll need to browse the Web, email, IM, and edit documents. Regardless of whether you choose a DVD or USB nothing you do is left on the computer you booted from.

  • Built-in online anonymity: The key feature that's going to appeal to most people is Tails' built-in online anonymity. This comes in the form of the customized web browser Iceweasel built using the anonymous Web browsing technology from Tor. The browser also includes popular security extensions like HTTPS Everywhere for secure browsing, Adblock Plus to block ads, and NoScript to block Java and Flash. Other than those features, the web browser works exactly like you'd expect a web browser to work.
  • Built-in encrypted email and chat: Additionally, you also get encrypted and private messaging. Tails includes the Claws email client with OpenPGP for email encryption and the instant messaging client Pidgin with an OTR cryptography tool that encrypts your IM conversations.
  • Built-in file encryption: When boot Tails from a USB drive instead of a DVD, you can save documents to the thumb drive and they're automatically encrypted using an encryption specification called LUKS. (Since the DVD is read-only, you can't save any files?which is its own form of security.)
  • A full suite of editing software: On top your web access being private you also get a full suite of work and creative software. Tails comes preloaded with Openoffice for editing documents, Gimp for editing photos, Audacity for editing sound, and plenty more additional software.

Now let's walk through how to set up a boot disc for yourself.

Step-by-Step Guide to Set Up Your Own Tails DVD or USB Drive?
Tails is pretty easy to set up on your own and it doesn't differ much from setting up any other Linux Live CD. However, a few extra steps do exist to verify your download.

Step 1: Download the Necessary Files

You need to download two different files to get started with Tails: an ISO (an image of Tails that is burned to a disc) and a cryptographic signature to verify the ISO image:

  1. The ISO Image (Direct download / Torrent)
  2. Cryptographic Signature (Direct download / Torrent)

The developers behind Tails recommend you verify your Tails ISO to make sure it's an officially released version that hasn't been tampered with. We won't walk through that process here, but they have instructions on their website for Windows and Mac or Linux.

Step 2: Burn Tails to a CD/DVD

You can find documentation for creating a Tails USB from scratch on each operating system here. Alternately, you can more easily make bootable USB installation of Tails after you boot from a Tails live DVD. For our purposes we're going to burn Tails to a bootable DVD because it's an easier process than creating a USB stick from scratch.

On Windows: Right-click the ISO image, select Burn Disc Image, select your DVD drive.

On Mac: Right-click the ISO image, select Burn "tails..." to Disc, select your DVD drive.

Once it's finished burning let's boot into Tails and kick the tires.

Step 4: Boot into Tails

Stick your Tails DVD, CD, or thumb drive into your computer and reboot. The process for booting into a disc or external drive depends on your system, so lets look at how to do it on Windows and Mac.

On a Windows System: Different Windows computers have different default settings for booting from an external drive. If yours doesn't already check for a boot DVD first you can always edit the BIOS boot order (often the DEL key at startup) to make sure your computer looks for a CD or USB before it starts. Alternately, you can closely watch the BIOS screen at the beginning of your computers startup for the Boot options shortcut (usually one of the function keys). When you get to the boot option menu, select your DVD drive and you'll boot into Tails.

On a Mac System: When you turn on your Mac immediately press and hold down the Option key to access the Startup Manager. Select the Tails DVD (the description will actually say "Windows") and you'll boot into Tails.

Step 5 (Optional): Clone the DVD onto a USB Drive
Now that you're booted into Tails it's easy to clone your boot DVD onto a USB drive directly from the Tails operating system. Here's what you need to do:

  1. Connect your USB drive to your computer.
  2. Select Applications > Tails > Tails USB Installer.
  3. Click the Clone and Install Button.
  4. Select your USB drive, click "Create Live USB Drive" and let the program run.

When the installation is complete you'll have a bootable USB drive. The benefit of the USB drive is that any files you create in Tails are saved and encrypted directly on your device. However, a USB drive could theoretically be hacked into if you leave it around which is why the ultra-paranoid might prefer a read-only DVD for Tails.

Also, Macs don't support USB booting without downloading and installing additional software called rEFit. This means you have to download and install rEFit on every Mac you want to boot into Tails from a USB drive.

Creating a bootable Tails disc is a simple process and a great use for one of those USB drives you have laying around doing nothing. Since you can use Tails on about any public computer you run into it's a great way to keep your browsing and usage hidden from the world. It's even beneficial on your home computer since you don't have to alter your system in any way.

"We were given no choice but to file suit against one of our largest distributors, Dish Network, because of their surprising move to market a product with the clear goal of violating copyrights and destroying the fundamental underpinnings of the broadcast television ecosystem," Fox said in a statement. "Their wrongheaded decision requires us to take swift action in order to aggressively defend the future of free, over-the-air television."

NBC said it was suing "in order to keep over the air broadcast television a strong competitor." Its lawsuit, like Fox and CBS's, said it depended on ad revenue to produce shows.

That echoed a statement by CBS CEO Les Moonves (right), who told TheWrap last week that AutoHop was "illegal" and asked, "How am I going to produce 'CSI' for $4 million without ads? I can't do that. I can't give the audience that kind of quality."

Dish, the nation's third-largest pay-television provider, contends that the Auto Hop technology is like a more advanced form of fast forwarding. With the touch of a button, viewers can decide not to watch the ads on recorded shows that aired the day before. (See ad, above.)

"Consumers should be able to fairly choose for themselves what they do and do not want to watch," David Shull, Dish senior vice president of programming, said in a statement. "Viewers have been skipping commercials since the advent of the remote control; we are giving them a feature they want and that gives them more control."

But networks made their distate for Auto Hop very clear at last week's upfront presentations to advertisers, when they suggested it was a threat to ad-supported television.

In its lawsuit, Fox said Dish's "PrimeTime Anytime" service -- which includes the Auto Hop feature -- is a "bootleg broadcast video-on-demand service" that "makes an unauthorized copy of the entire primetime broadcast for all four major networks every night." (It does indeed record all the network shows, though Dish would take issue with the "unauthorized copy" language.)

Nasdaq Wins Kraft Listing From NYSE After Mishandling Facebook

Kraft Foods Inc. is spurning the New York Stock Exchange and moving its stock listing to the Nasdaq, a move the company says will cut costs as it prepares to split into two publicly traded companies.

The packaged foods maker also said Friday that Nasdaq's billboard in the heart of Times Square will give its brands such as Oreo, Nabisco and Cadbury greater visibility.

Kraft spokesman Michael Mitchell said the company was impressed with the advertising and brand-building Nasdaq does on behalf of its member companies. He also noted that the listing fees were "considerably less" for Nasdaq.

The transfer to the Nasdaq will take place June 26. The Northfield, Ill., company's ticker will remain "KFT" until the company's division. The two new companies created by the split will also be traded on the Nasdaq.

One company will focus on North American grocery brands like Oscar Mayer and Velveeta and be called Kraft Foods Group Inc., with the symbol "KRFT." Mondelez International Inc., which will focus on global snack brands, will trade under the symbol "MDLZ."

The move should provide some consolation for the Nasdaq, which is owned by Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. The exchange has been under heavy criticism for its handling of Facebook Inc.'s initial public stock offering.

U.S. braces for tsunami debris, but impact unclear

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? More than a year after a tsunami devastated Japan, killing thousands of people and washing millions of tons of debris into the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. government and West Coast states don't have a cohesive plan for cleaning up the rubble that floats to American shores.

There is also no firm handle yet on just what to expect.

The Japanese government estimates that 1.5 million tons of debris is floating in the ocean from the catastrophe. Some experts in the United States think the bulk of that trash will never reach shore, while others fear a massive, slowly-unfolding environmental disaster.

"I think this is far worse than any oil spill that we've ever faced on the West Coast or any other environmental disaster we've faced on the West Coast" in terms of the debris' weight, type and geographic scope, said Chris Pallister, president of a group dedicated to cleaning marine debris from the Alaska coastline.

David Kennedy, assistant administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Ocean Service, told a U.S. Senate panel last month that in most cases debris removal decisions will fall to individual states. Funding hasn't been determined.

U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, and other West Coast political leaders, have called that scenario unacceptable, saying tsunami debris poses a pending national emergency. "If this was a one-time event all at once, we'd declare it an emergency and we'd be on the ground like that," he said, during the hearing he led.

One astonishing example of how the unexpected can suddenly appear occurred Wednesday in Oregon when a concrete and metal dock that measured 66 feet long, seven feet tall and 19 feet wide, washed ashore a mile north of Newport. A Japanese consulate official in Portland confirmed that the dock came from the northern Japanese city of Misawa, cut loose in the tsunami of March 11, 2011.

"I think that the dock is a forerunner of all the heavier stuff that's coming later, and amongst that heavier stuff are going to be a lot of drums full of chemicals that we won't be able to identify," Pallister said.

His group, Gulf of Alaska Keeper, works in the same region devastated by the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which dumped 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound in 1989.

Tsunami debris is tough to monitor. Winds and ocean currents regularly change, while rubbish can break up. Some trash, like fishing gear, kerosene and gas containers and building supplies, can be tied to the tsunami only anecdotally. But in other cases ? a soccer ball and a derelict fishing boat in Alaska and a motorcycle in British Columbia, for example ? items have been traced back to the disaster through their owners.

NOAA projects the debris having spread over an area roughly three times the size of the contiguous United States, but can't pinpoint when or how much might eventually reach the coasts of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii.

An independent group of scientists and environmental activists are scheduled to sail aboard the "Sea Dragon" from Japan Saturday to an area north of the Hawaiian islands, with plans to zigzag through the debris, document what's floating and try to determine what might reach the West Coast.

"You have a unique experiment," said Marcus Eriksen, a researcher at the Algalita Marine Research Institute in Long Beach, Calif., who is leading the expedition. "You have entire homes and all their contents ... anything you may find in a Japanese home could be floating in the ocean still intact."

Seattle-based oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer, who has been tracking ocean trash for 20 years, predicts the main mass of tsunami debris will reach the U.S. coast from Northern California to southeast Alaska as early as October, with the beginning of fall storms.

Cleanup plans should be finalized no later than September, Ebbesmeyer cautioned. There may also be sensitive issues to be decided, he said, including how to deal with any human remains or personal mementos.

But just who will clean up the debris and who will pay for it hasn't been fully determined.

Begich wants to make at least $45 million available for local community groups to conduct clean-up efforts. Gulf of Alaska Keeper believes Congress should set aside $50 million a year for four years.

As it stands now, NOAA has $618,000 allocated to clean up tsunami debris. The agency's total marine debris program budget could drop by 26 percent to $3.4 million, under President Obama's proposed budget.

Marine trash isn't a new problem. The ocean is littered with all kinds of things that can trap and kill wildlife, hurt human health and navigation and blight beaches.

NOAA has previously given grants to local groups for cleanup work. The agency expects the tsunami debris to simply add to the ongoing problem of massive amounts of trash flowing into the ocean every day.

Volunteers in California report their efforts being stretched thin just in dealing with day-to-day rubbish. Seasonal opportunity for cleanup could close as early as September at spots in Alaska, where some beaches are accessible only by boat or aircraft and removing trash can be difficult and expensive. Washington has monitored some incoming debris for radioactivity.

Eben Schwartz, marine debris program manager for the California Coastal Commission, said more recognition needs to be given to the fact that it will be beach cleanup volunteers who respond to tsunami debris.

"Given that, I would like to see more state and federal support for the volunteer programs that will be taking the lead," he said. They're going to need help, resources and funding, he said.

NOAA's marine debris program expects solid plans from the states within the next few months. The governors of Washington, Oregon and California, as well as the premier of British Columbia, have said they will work together to manage debris.

Widespread or concentrated die-offs of marine animals aren't expected, said John Hocevar, oceans campaign director for Greenpeace, but there could be local impacts.

NOAA officials say they don't think there's any radiation risk from the debris, despite the meltdown at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

Merrick Burden, executive director of the Marine Conservation Alliance in Alaska and Washington, said he thinks states, local governments, volunteers and industries including fishing and tourism need to pull together to clean up debris, and not simply wait and hope for federal funds.

"One of the things standing in the way is a unified, coordinated approach to this," he said.

Pallister worried that a lack of awareness may hamper the effort.

"You just don't have that visceral, gut-wrenching reaction to having oiled otters and drowned seabirds in that crude to get the public pumped up about it," he said of the tsunami debris. "And even if you could get the public pumped up, again, you don't have that culprit to go after ? a bad guy. It's kind of a tough one to deal with."

Howdy, Muschamp: College Station mayor fires YouTube shot at Gators coach

by Jason Lieser

Will Muschamp?s first mini-controversy with Texas A&M is growing.

After hearing that Muschamp said, ?You ever been to College Station? It?ll be the last time you go,? at a recent Gator Club speech, Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said he should, ?worry about his own team.?

But the mayor of College Station, Nancy Berry, kicked it up a notch in her response. Berry filmed a 90-second video aimed at Muschamp with several embarrassing photo-shopped images of him.

?Howdy, Muschamp,? Berry opened.

She continued, ?For someone who doesn?t care much for what College Station has to offer, you sure are here a lot.?

She concluded by promising to send him a gift basket stuffed with local treasures and said, ?We?re really excited to host you and as many Gator fans as you can bring on September 8.?

LEAP Financial Suspends Originations

Auto Lending News Reports:

LEAP Financial has stopped originating leases due to lack of capital, the company announced yesterday.

The San Diego, Calif.-based vehicle leasing company serves consumers who have difficulty obtaining credit and works with them to either keep their current vehicle or obtain another one. The company's product also enables customers who are unable to qualify for traditional financing to lease a vehicle.

Despite attempts to source capital over the past few months, the company has been unable to complete a transaction.

?We have not grown our volumes as quickly as we originally targeted due to low bad credit auto loandefault rates and high used-car prices for repossessed vehicles,? said LEAP Financial CEO Tim Condon in a statement. ?We still believe, however, that the consumer demand exists and that this will be an effective loss mitigation tool for lenders. Attracting capital with a unique model in a specific niche has been difficult."

LEAP's management is convinced that there are thousands of consumers who unnecessarily lose their cars to repossession.

"Hopefully, LEAP's innovations have added to the industry dialogue on how best to deal with bad credit auto loanmodifications and repossessions," Condon said.

(AP) ? Her screams were not drowned out by the clamor of the crazed mob of nearly 200 men around her. An endless number of hands reached toward the woman in the red shirt in an assault scene that lasted less than 15 minutes but felt more like an hour.

She was pushed by the sea of men for about a block into a side street from Tahrir Square. Many of the men were trying to break up the frenzy, but it was impossible to tell who was helping and who was assaulting. Pushed against the wall, the unknown woman's head finally disappeared. Her screams grew fainter, then stopped. Her slender tall frame had clearly given way. She apparently had passed out.

The helping hands finally splashed the attackers with bottles of water to chase them away.

The assault late Tuesday was witnessed by an Associated Press reporter who was almost overwhelmed by the crowd herself and had to be pulled to safety by men who ferried her out of the melee in an open Jeep.

Reports of assaults on women in Tahrir, the epicenter of the uprising that forced Hosni Mubarak to step down last year, have been on the rise with a new round of mass protests to denounce a mixed verdict against the ousted leader and his sons in a trial last week.

The late Tuesday assault was the last straw for many. Protesters and activists met Wednesday to organize a campaign to prevent sexual harassment in the square. They recognize it is part of a bigger social problem that has largely gone unpunished in Egypt. But the phenomenon is trampling on their dream of creating in Tahrir a micro-model of a state that respects civil liberties and civic responsibility, which they had hoped would emerge after Mubarak's ouster.

"Enough is enough," said Abdel-Fatah Mahmoud, a 22-year-old engineering student, who met Wednesday with friends to organize patrols of the square in an effort to deter attacks against women. "It has gone overboard. No matter what is behind this, it is unacceptable. It shouldn't be happening on our streets let alone Tahrir."

No official numbers exist for attacks on women in the square because police do not go near the area, and women rarely report such incidents. But activists and protesters have reported a number of particularly violent assaults on women in the past week. Many suspect such assaults are organized by opponents of the protests to weaken the spirit of the protesters and drive people away.

Mahmoud said two of his female friends were cornered Monday and pushed into a small passageway by a group of men in the same area where the woman in the red shirt was assaulted. One was groped while the other was seriously assaulted, Mahmoud said, refusing to divulge specifics other than to insist she wasn't raped.

Mona Seif, a well-known activist who has been trying to promote awareness about the problem, said Wednesday she was told about three different incidents in the past five days, including two that were violent. In one incident, the attackers ripped the woman's clothes off and trampled on her companions, she said.

Women, who participated in the 18-day uprising that ended with Mubarak's Feb. 11, 2011 ouster as leading activists, protesters, medics and even fighters to ward off attacks by security agents or affiliated thugs on Tahrir, have found themselves facing the same groping and assaults that have long plagued Egypt's streets during subsequent protests in the square.

Women also have been targeted in recent crackdowns on protesters by military and security troops, a practice commonly used by Mubarak security that grew even more aggressive in the days following his ouster. In a defining image of the post-Mubarak state violence against women, troops were captured on video stomping with their boots on the bare chest of a woman, with only her blue bra showing, as other troops pulled her by the arms across the ground.

A 2008 report by the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights says two-thirds of women in Egypt experienced sexual harassment on a daily basis. A string of mass assaults on women in 2006 during the Muslim feast following the holy month of Ramadan prompted police to increase the number of patrols to combat it but legislation providing punishment was never passed.

"If you know you can get away with sexual harassment and assault, then there is an overall impunity," Human Rights Watch researcher Heba Morayef said.

The case is more paradoxical in Tahrir, which has come to symbolize the revolution, but has lost its original luster among Egyptians weary of more than a year of turmoil.

Women say they briefly experienced a "new Egypt," with strict social customs casually cast aside during the initial 18-day uprising ? at least among the protesters who turned the square into a protected zone. But that image was marred when Lara Logan, a U.S. correspondent for CBS television, was sexually assaulted by a frenzied mob in Tahrir on the day Mubarak stepped down, when hundreds of thousands of Egyptians came to the square to celebrate.

The post-Mubarak political reality for women also has deteriorated. They have lost political ground in the 16 months since Mubarak's ouster ? even winning fewer seats in parliament in the first free and fair elections in decades. The 508-member parliament has only eight female legislators, a sharp drop from the more than 60 in the 2010 parliament thanks to a Mubarak-era quota. Women's rights groups also fear the growing power of Islamist groups will lead to new restrictions.

Activists have no idea what finally happened to the woman in the red shirt. But they have been alarmed by the rise in violent attacks on women, which has chipped away at efforts to project the square as a utopia free of discrimination and violence.

Seif said there is a responsibility inside the square.

"I think it is getting worse because people don't want to acknowledge it is happening or do something to reduce it," said Seif. "It is our job to put an end to it, at least in Tahrir."
