South Korea successfully launches native rocket and satellite into space

South Korea launches first native rocket and satellite into space

The spacefaring club has been a small one: to date, just 10 countries have managed to build their own rocket and successfully deploy at least a satellite. Make that 11. South Korea has entered the fold by successfully launching its mostly self-developed, two-stage Naro rocket and putting the vehicle's Science and Technology Satellite-2C payload into orbit. The achievement comes after two prominent failures in 2009 and 2010, and is partly symbolic when there's no plans for a short-term follow-up. However, the success gets the ball rolling for the long run -- the Korea Aerospace Research Institute is working with contractors to build completely in-house rocket stages by 2016, and reach 300 tons of thrust as soon as 2018.

Cleveland's Ray Horton believes NFL hiring practice works

By Tom Withers | Associated Press

BEREA -- Ray Horton doesn't believe his skin color played any role in him not being hired as an NFL head coach.

It just wasn't his time.

Introduced as Cleveland's new defensive coordinator on Tuesday, Horton said while he's "disappointed" that he didn't get a head coaching job after interviewing with several teams, he's grateful to have gone through the process and feels the league's Rooney Rule to promote minorities works despite contrary statistics.

Minority candidates were shut out of 15 coaching and top front-office jobs this offseason, a troubling disparity that led to criticism of the NFL's hiring practices. There are only four minority head coaches going into the 2013 season, the fewest since 2003, when the Rooney Rule was implemented.

Horton, however, feels he wasn't bypassed because he's African-American or because wears his hair in tight braids. There's no doubt he's got the credentials.

"I believe every NFL team owner is trying to get the best coach for their team," he said. "I don't think anybody goes into it thinking, 'I'm going to hire this guy because of 'X' reason other than he's going to lead the team to victories. So from that standpoint, I respect the process. So does it (the Rooney Rule) work or not work? I think it worked because I think every NFL team this year hired a guy that they thought was going to lead them to victory. I don't think there was one owner that said, 'I'm hiring this guy because I think he's going to run my program into the ground.' So does it work? Sure it works."

Horton was one of the candidates who met with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner before they hired Rob Chudzinski, who spent the past two seasons as Carolina's offensive coordinator. Horton noted that hiring offensive-minded coaches seemed to be this year's trend.

The 52-year-old, who played in 147 career games as a defensive back for Cincinnati and Dallas, remains hopeful he'll one day get his shot at being a head coach. But until that time arrives he won't be bitter and he's protesting against what appears to be an unequal system in a league where about 70 percent of the players are minorities.

"I wasn't disappointed at all for minorities," he said. "I was disappointed for Ray Horton. ... I'm just disappointed because I have expectations. I have expectations for our team, for our defense. If you don't meet them, you're disappointed. I'm not mad. I'm not frustrated. Disappointment is the right adjective for me because you're disappointed and you move on."

Horton, who spent the past two seasons as Arizona's defensive coordinator, can't wait to get his hands on a young Cleveland defense he hopes to mold into one of the league's best units.

After recently stating in a radio interview that he intended to switch the Browns from a 4-3 front to a 3-4, Horton refused to put any numerical label on the base scheme he'll use next season.

"We're going to look like an aggressive, forward attacking defense that has big men that can run and little men that can hit," he said. "That's the most important thing to me -- what do we look like, not what we line up in. We may be a 3-4 on one snap. We may be a 4-3 on another snap. I guarantee you we'll be a 5-2 sometimes, and we'll be a 4-4 sometimes. We are a multi-front, attacking defense, and that's the most important thing, not what player lines up where, how he stands, what stance he's in. Attacking, aggressive defense."

Fine with Chudzinski, who envisions a Browns defense with "guys flying around."

"That style of defense, the multi-front, attacking defense is the defense that I looked at is the toughest to play against from an offensive perspective and the defense that we want to be here," Chudzinski said.

Under Horton, the Cardinals' defense ranked among the league leader in several statistical categories last season. Arizona was second in interceptions (22) and fourth in takeaways (33).

Horton has been breaking down game film as he evaluates Cleveland's defense and he's been impressed.

"I've got big men that can run, little men that can hit," he said, drawing laughter at the catchphrase he repeated several times. "I love this team. I love the way it's constituted right now because they give effort. From the first game against Philadelphia all the way through to the last game against Pittsburgh, I don't see a dropoff of effort.

"If you can give me that for 16 weeks like they did, you don't need anything else.

Horton said Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, known for his blitz-at-any-time style, has been a major influence on his life on and off the field.

"He treats every single person like they're the most important person in the room," Horton said of the Hall of Famer. "It's a gift. Players love playing for coach LeBeau. That's the highest form of respect that your players love playing for you."

Horton hopes to build that type of relationship with his players in Cleveland. He has already been contacted by a few, including linebacker and captain D'Qwell Jackson. Horton views trust as an essential component, and he wants the Browns to believe in him from the start.

"I'm sure they have some apprehension about 'Who is this guy? What's he going to do? What's that mean to me?" he said. "I just keep going back to as long as you do your job well, nobody has an issue."

Shell 'not culpable' over spills

A Dutch court has rejected four out of five allegations against Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell over oil pollution in Nigeria's Niger Delta region.

But it found a subsidiary of the firm, Shell Nigeria, responsible for one case of pollution, ordering it to pay compensation to one Nigerian farmer.

The level of damages in that case will be established at a later hearing.

The landmark case against the Anglo-Dutch firm was brought by four Nigerian farmers and Friends of the Earth.

The case is linked to spills in Goi, Ogoniland; Oruma in Bayelsa State and a third in Ikot Ada Udo, Akwa Ibom State.

The farmers had alleged that oil spills had poisoned their fish ponds and farmland with leaking pipelines.

The court said Shell was only guilty of negligence.

"The district court has established that four oil spills were not caused by defective maintenance by Shell but by sabotage from third parties," the court said in its judgement.

It said according to Nigerian law, the firm was not responsible for damage caused in this way.

However, in one case it found Shell Nigeria culpable of neglecting its duty of care and ruled that: "Shell could and should have prevented this sabotage in an easy way".

Friends of the Earth have said they are "flabbergasted" by the verdict and intend to appeal.

A123 sale to Chinese firm gets US approval

Wanxiang Group Corp. said Tuesday it received authorization by the US Treasury Department's?Committee for Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to purchase the bankrupt batterymaker. The approval is the last official hurdle before the Chinese company can take control of A123. Asian shares rise, cautious before Fed, U.S. data

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares rose on Tuesday as recent selling drew bargain hunters, but investors were cautious ahead of more U.S. economic reports and a Federal Reserve policy decision later in the week that may offer clues to the Fed's stimulus plans.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> advanced 0.7 percent to snap a four-day losing streak, led by a 1.1 percent jump in Australian shares <.axjo> to a fresh 21-month high on gains in financials shares.

South Korean shares <.ks11>, which slumped to an 8-week low on Monday, rebounded 0.8 percent.

Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225> reversed earlier declines and rose 0.6 percent, buoyed by optimism over earnings of major banks. It briefly touched a fresh 32-month high above 11,000 on Monday. <.t/>

The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> eased slightly on Monday after an eight-day winning run but held above 1,500 points, after closing above that level on Friday for the first time in more than five years.

Risk appetite has been improving overall with U.S. earnings generally solid. A rise in a gauge of planned U.S. business spending in December added to a recent run of positive global economic data, along with signs of easing financial stress in the euro zone. Euro zone blue chips touched fresh 18-month peaks on Monday.

More solid U.S. growth indicators would, however, fuel speculation the Fed may consider pulling back on aggressive easing stimulus. The Fed ends a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday. The first estimate of U.S. fourth-quarter gross domestic product also will be released on Wednesday, followed by non-farm payrolls on Friday.

"Ahead of key events, markets are likely to stay in ranges. But with yields on U.S. Treasury and German government bonds inching higher, one might say investors may be shifting funds to riskier assets from safe-havens," said Yuji Saito, director of foreign exchange at Credit Agricole in Tokyo.

"That's part of the reason why the euro has stayed firm," he said.

Saito said while a rise in U.S. yields underpins the dollar against the yen, they were likely to be capped with end-month selling from exporters and options lined up between 90.50 and 91.50 yen.

The benchmark U.S. 10-year note yield briefly pierced 2 percent on Monday for the first time since last April, and inched up 1 basis point (bps) in Asia from New York close. The 10-year Japanese government bond yield also rose.

Naka Matsuzawa, fixed income strategist at Nomura Securities, said in a research that 5-year Treasuries have sold off about 10 bps over the last two days and breached 0.80 percent that has served as a support since April 2012, a sell-off which "would not have occurred unless expectations of an economic recovery have gained ground to the extent that the monetary policy outlook begins to change."

"The market is aware that risks are toward more hawkish FOMC statements in the future rather than dovish ones," considering a pick-up in the U.S. economic recovery and stock market rally, as well as the underlying global risk-on trend, he said.

YEN SELLING PAUSES

Yen selling paused, helping to bolster the benchmark South Korean stock index which is vulnerable to exchange rate swings as exporters lead market capitalization.

The dollar fell 0.1 percent to 90.78 yen after touching 91.32 on Monday, its highest level since June 2010, while the euro recouped earlier losses against the yen to steady around 122.14 yen after hitting 122.91 on Monday, its highest point since April.

The euro steadied against the dollar at $1.3456.

The pound fell to $1.5687 GBP=D4, near its lowest since August, in part because of comments from incoming Bank of England Governor Mark Carney that there was still scope for monetary policy to do more in the developed world.

"The prospect of more activist monetary policy is not exactly an encouraging one for GBP, certainly not as it comes on top of a host of other negative developments - an economy that is triple-dipping, a government that is struggling to cut its deficit, and soul-searching about the UK's role within the EU," wrote analysts at JPMorgan in a note.

But a more positive global growth outlook underpinned commodities.

U.S. crude rose 0.2 percent to $96.67 a barrel and Brent inched up 0.1 percent to $113.54.

London copper gained 0.2 percent to $8,065.50 a tonne.

Gold inched up 0.3 percent to $1,659.66 an ounce but was capped by receding investor appetite for safe-haven assets.

Local media: Brazil nightclub fire kills at least 90

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - At least 90 people were killed in a nightclub in southern Brazil on Sunday after a band's pyrotechnics show caused the establishment to catch fire, local officials said.

Emergency officials were still counting the dead, and at least 50 people were injured, Guido Melo, commander of the fire brigade in Rio Grande do Sul state, told Reuters.

The incident occurred in the city of Santa Maria 187 miles west of the state capital of Porto Alegre.

Estado de S.Paulo newspaper reported on its website that as many as 2,000 people were in the nightclub when the fire broke out.

Egypt's leader imposes state of emergency in 3 cities

"Down, down Morsi, down down the regime that killed and tortured us!" people in Port Said chanted as the coffins of those killed on Saturday were carried through the streets.

In a televised address, Morsi said a nightly curfew would be introduced in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez, starting Monday evening. He also called for dialogue with top politicians. About 200 people protested in Ismailia after the announcement.

"The protection of the nation is the responsibility of everyone. We will confront any threat to its security with force and firmness within the remit of the law," the president said, adding that he offered condolences to families of the victims of those who died in the cities.

In Cairo the newly appointed interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim was ejected from the funeral of one of the police officers who died during Saturday's clashes in Port Said, according to witnesses and police sources.

A police officer at the funeral said many of his colleagues blame the interior minister on the deaths of at least two policemen during Saturday's clashes as he did not allow the police there to carry weapons and were only given teargas bombs.

State television said seven people died from gunshot wounds on Sunday. Port Said's head of hospitals, Abdel Rahman Farag, told Reuters more than 400 people had suffered from teargas inhalation, while 38 were wounded by gunshots.

Gunshots had killed many of the 33 who died on Saturday when residents went on the rampage after a court sentenced 21 people, mostly from the Mediterranean port, to death for their role in deadly soccer violence at a stadium there last year.

A military source said many people in Port Said, which lies next to the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, possess guns because they do not trust the authorities to protect them. However it was not clear who was behind the deaths and injuries.

In Cairo, police fired teargas at dozens at protesters throwing stones and petrol bombs in a fourth day of clashes over what demonstrators there and in other cities say is a power grab by Islamists two years after Hosni Mubarak was overthrown.

In Ismaila city, which lies on the Suez Canal between the cities of Suez and Port Said, police also fired teargas at protesters attacking a police station with petrol bombs and stones, according to witnesses and a security source there.

The protesters accuse Morsi, elected in June with the support of his Muslim Brotherhood group, of betraying the democratic goals of the revolution. Most of the deaths since Thursday were in Port Said and Suez, both cities where the army has now been deployed.

The violence adds to the daunting task facing Morsi as he tries to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary election expected in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy.

Deep rift
It has exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Morsi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader by undemocratic means.

Heba Morayef of Human Rights Watch in Cairo said a state of emergency reintroduced laws that gave police sweeping powers of arrest "purely because (people) look suspicious".

"It is a classic knee jerk reaction to think the emergency law will help bring security," she said. "It gives so much discretion to the Ministry of Interior that it ends up causing more abuse which in turn causes more anger."

The opposition Popular Current and other groups have called for more protests on Monday to mark what was one of the bloodiest days of the 2011 uprising.

On a bridge close to Tahrir Square, youths hurled stones at police in riot gear who fired teargas to push them back towards the square, the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.?

"None of the revolution's goals have been realized," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday.

"Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."

Clashes also erupted in other streets near the square. The U.S. and British embassies, both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday, normally a working day.

The army, Egypt's interim ruler until Morsi's election, was sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, which both lie on the Suez canal. In Suez, at least eight people were killed in clashes with police.

Many ordinary Egyptians are frustrated by the violence that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.

"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30, referring to those gathered in Tahrir. "They are thugs destroying the country."

Call for dialogue
The National Defence Council, headed by Morsi, called on Saturday for national dialogue to discuss political differences.

That offer has been cautiously welcomed by the opposition National Salvation Front. But the coalition has demanded a clear agenda and guarantees that any agreements will be implemented.

The Front, formed late last year when Morsi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and call for more protests if its demands are not met, including for an early presidential vote.

Egypt's transition has been blighted from the outset by political rows and turbulence on the streets that have driven investors out and kept many tourists away. Its currency, the pound, has steadily weakened against the dollar.

Plumbing And The Family Tree: The Roots Run Deep

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

My husband had just left for a 3:00PM-11:00 PM shift at work. I was home with my two little girls and my two stepsons were on their way home from school. I walk into the bathroom and see the floor is covered in water.

The toilet had overflowed at a very inconvenient time. Then again, what would be a convenient time? Not only that, but I heard something behind the shower curtain. I open it up and find my bathtub filled with about six inches of dirty water.

I didn?t panic at this point because it just so happens that my father in law is a plumber. He also happened to be the one picking up my boys from school and dropping them off. How convenient!

Plumber

He pulled up in the driveway with the boys and I asked him to come in and look at the bathroom. He knew right away that it was a main sewer blockage. His demeanor didn?t give me that sense of relief I was looking for.

He went outside and came back in much more confident. He said our house had a pipe leading to the outside that connected to the main sewer line. This was a very good thing because then he was able to get to the blockage. If we had not had this, like many houses don?t, we would have been looking at a very expensive fix. It could have been more than a thousand dollars. We are a family of six living on an extremely tight budget. I was very relieved to have this pipe to say the least.

My father in law went home to get his tools, which was just a few minutes away. In the meantime, I was texting my husband to try and tell him the news without sending him into complete panic mode.

During this time, we could not use our upstairs or downstairs bathrooms. We couldn?t use the sink or washer either. Of course, the moment when the toilets are shut down is when you have to go to the bathroom.

My two year old is in the middle of potty training, so she had a potty chair that came in handy for my nine year old. Ha Ha! My 12 year old refused to go in it and it was too cold outside. My mother in law came to the rescue and took the boys to their Auntie?s house.

Baby on Potty

My father in law comes back with his tools. It involves sticking a tool all the way through the pipe until the blockage was found. Sure enough, there was a big blockage. I thought it was a good sign. I had it in my head that he would just pull out what was in there and we would move on. He looks at me and says that he hopes it?s not tree roots because he doesn?t have the tool to cut that. I saw dollar signs immediately. So, I sat their waiting and he pulls some things out. He looks at me and says, ?Tree roots.?

Tree Roots Wall

This was the last thing I wanted to hear. We sat discussing the options and trying to figure out how to get these taken care of. He called a guy from our church who owns a plumbing, heating, and cooling business.

Instead of him coming out and charging us a lot of money, he drops off his tool for my father in law to use. The guy lives one block over, so it was convenient on his way home. This was such an answer to prayer. It was cold and rainy, and it was completely dark by this point. My father in law spent a lot of time cutting roots and cleaning it out.

About four hours later we had use of everything again. I had to deep clean the bathroom with bleach, but that was the worst part for me. We were so blessed to have all these events happen in the perfect order. I sent my husband a text and his response was Praise God! I couldn?t agree with him more. It?s times like this that remind me of why it?s important for me to help others when I can.

This whole experience reminded me how important it is to think about the resources we have close to home. Many times, someone knows somebody who can help much cheaper than if you had called an outside source. Many times we panic and call a company right away to come deal with things like this.

There may be people in your family, your church, place of employment, and even friends that can help save you time and a lot of money. Always remember to use your own gifts and talents to pay it forward and help someone else when you get the chance. It will be a blessing to them and more than likely an even bigger blessing to you.

Bankruptcy Court Clears Way For Montefiore Medical Center To ...

Google?s latest biannual report on government information requests into its users, released this week, highlights for the first time how outdated privacy laws allow access to users? information with only a subpoena ? not a warrant, the standard in almost all other searches.

In the United States, from July to December 2012, 68 percent of government requests came via subpoena, Google reported. Just 22 percent were through search warrants. (The remaining 10 percent were legal processes Google said were ?difficult to categorize.?) In total, government agencies made 14,791 requests on U.S. users and accounts, and Google complied with 90 percent of them.

Google products ? search, Gmail, YouTube, Docs, etc. ? are accessed billions of time every day by users around the world. Most require accounts, and so, to facilitate better advertising, the search giant stores users? online activity.

But governments want that information too, especially when investigating crimes. Out-of-date digital privacy laws allow law enforcement agencies to sidestep the usual constitutional requirement to obtain a search and use only a subpoena, a document that can be issued by a prosecutor in private, not an impartial judge in open court.

The Electronic Communications Privacy Act, the law that governs such requests, was passed in 1986, well before terms like ?e-mail? or ?cloud computing? were common. Law enforcement agencies have interpreted the language to mean that they can treat any e-mail older than 180 days stored on a third-party server (such as Gmail or Hotmail) to be abandoned.

Therefore, the logic goes, it has no reasonable expectation of privacy ? a key ingredient to the ?unreasonable? portion of a search ? and can be subpoenaed.

The legislation is slowly being challenged in various Circuit Courts of Appeals around the country. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who wrote the Privacy Act, attempted to pass some updates in November, but the proceedings were lost among year-end congressional wrangling and the presidential election. The senator said reforming the law is one of his top priorities in 2013.

Google should be commended for noting that the Electronic Communications Privacy Act?s weaknesses are the reason they have so many requests in the United States. Many people do not realize that law enforcement agencies have such access to their private digital information.

It?s no doubt cumbersome for businesses such as Google to deal with these requests and risk jeopardizing user trust ? a touchy subject for the company already, as it grapples with its own privacy standards regarding using user information for more targeted advertising.

A final note: Though Google?s report on information requests has much more detail, both Twitter and LinkedIn publish similar reports. Facebook, with a billion users, does not.

Video tweets on Vine: You know how there are animated GIFs that spread like wildfire across the Internet for every event? A recent example: The one of San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh melting down over a referee?s call during Sunday?s NFC Championship game. That was truly animated.

Now, Twitter is getting into the animated GIF game with an app called Vine, which lets you create and post short, looping videos.

The San Francisco company officially launched Vine Thursday, though it reportedly bought the three-person New York startup back in October. Terms of the deal were not announced.

?Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine? ? they last only six seconds or less ? ?inspires creativity,? Michael Sippey, Twitter vice president of product, wrote in a blog post. ?Now that you can easily capture motion and sound, we look forward to seeing what you create.?

Posts on Vine, available only for the iPhone and iPod Touch for the moment, ?are about abbreviation ? the shortened form of something larger,? Vine co-founder and General Manager Dom Hofmann said in a post announcing Vine had joined Twitter, the company that made digital brevity a business model.

?They?re little windows into the people, settings, ideas and objects that make up your life. They?re quirky, and we think that?s part of what makes them so special.?

Twitter Chairman Jack Dorsey went a bit further. Vine, he said, ?brings an entirely new art form to the world.?

Whether that?s truly the case remains to be seen, but these little ?snacks? of video do tap into the popularity of animated GIFs and could help Twitter drive up overall engagement in the microblogging service, although the app does allow you to post simultaneously on Facebook as well.

And what about the bottom line? Artful or not, it may not be too long before advertisers see ?sponsored? Vine videos as a way to get their messages out.

China HSBC flash PMI hits two-year high in January

BEIJING (Reuters) - Growth in China's giant factory sector accelerated to a two-year high in January, a preliminary private survey showed, as manufacturers received more local and foreign orders in an encouraging sign for the country's economic rebound.

The HSBC flash purchasing managers' index (PMI) rose to 51.9 in January, the highest since January 2011 and above the 50-point level that shows accelerating growth in the sector from the previous month.

The PMI, the earliest preview of China's economic health in 2013, is the latest indication that the world's second-largest economy is steadily recovering from a near two-year cool-down.

"Despite the still tepid external demand, the domestic-driven restocking process is likely to add steam to China's ongoing recovery in the coming months," Qu Hongbin, chief China economist at HSBC, said on Thursday.

Asian investors welcomed the data.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan defied nervousness over Apple Inc's disappointing earnings to edge up 0.1 percent, while the Australian dollar steadied from an earlier slip.

HSBC said the sub-indices for output, new orders and employment that account for three quarters of the flash PMI all improved in January to hover above 50.

The output index climbed to 22-month highs while the employment sub-index was at its highest since May 2011.

Demand for Chinese exports also improved slightly this month, the flash index showed, but it shed little light on whether the pick-up would last.

China's exports had a surprisingly strong spurt in December, contributing to the country's emergence from a protracted cool-down, though analysts worry the rebound would be short-lived on soft U.S. and European demand.

On the other hand, analysts said the gentle up-swing in domestic activity appears to be sustainable and should drive China's economic recovery.

"The consumer is coming back," said Tim Condon, an ING economist in Singapore.

Chinese shoppers have spent more in recent months after the country's successful leadership change last year and a stabilizing euro zone raised confidence, he said.

"Manufacturers are seeing the pick-up in spending growth as a reason to expand production," Condon said.

General Motors Co said last week it will add 400 dealers in China this year as it looks to keep growing faster than China's overall automotive industry which is expected to expand by 8 percent this year.

EXPORT ORDERS RECOVER

The new export orders sub-index rose to 50.1 in January, up from December's 49.2 that pointed to waning demand.

The sub-index was persistently weak in the past year, rising above the 50-point threshold for only three months in 2012 and at times contradicting China's official trade data.

HSBC's final PMI had showed China's new export orders cooling in December, at odds with government data that said exports zoomed to seven-month highs that month.

The jump in exports, alongside generous government investment in infrastructure, helped to pull China's economy out of its worst downturn in three years between October and December to grow 7.9 percent from a year earlier.

But the late spike in activity was not enough to prevent China from sinking into its slowest annual pace of economic expansion in 13 years in 2012, growing 7.8 percent.

Many analysts are cautiously optimistic about China's economic prospects this year and are betting on steady state investment to stabilize growth. Exports, however, are expected to remain a drag.

A Reuters poll this week showed analysts predict China's annual economic growth would rebound a shade to 8.1 percent this year.

But faster growth is also expected to fuel inflation.

While a majority of the 24 analysts polled by Reuters believed China would not change its monetary policy this year, a third of them thought the central bank could raise interest rates in the second half of 2013.

Thursday's flash PMI showed price pressures may be building. The input price sub-index was at its highest since September 2011, while the output price sub-index pulled back slightly.

HSBC said its PMI survey is based on a poll of purchasing executives from over 420 manufacturing firms, and that the flash PMI is compiled from responses from 85 percent to 90 percent of that pool.

But in a sign that China's recovery could be uneven, German engineering conglomerate Siemens AG warned on Wednesday that demand from China was likely to remain weak for the coming months after it saw global orders for industrial automation and drive technology slide in its first quarter.

"The United States and Germany developed well, but China's demand as an industrial country will pick up again in the second half of the year at the earliest," Siemens' finance chief Joe Kaeser told journalists.

China's tainted chicken scare hit McDonald's sales: CEO

(Reuters) - Scares over the safety of China's chicken supply are taking a small bite out of McDonald's Corp's sales in that country, executives for the fast-food chain said on Wednesday.

Chinese authorities have cleared McDonald's and KFC owner Yum Brands Inc of charges they had served chicken laced with excessive chemicals, but the iconic U.S. chains - long considered to serve safer and higher quality food than domestic chains - remain under fire from local media and consumers.

The chicken scare "minimally impacted" McDonald's sales in China during the fourth quarter and continues to hurt business this year, Chief Executive Don Thompson said on a conference with analysts.

McDonald's sales at established restaurants for China fell 0.9 percent during the fourth quarter.

"We are committed to ensuring the highest food safety and quality standards are met around the world," Thompson said.

Earlier this month Yum apologized to customers in China over its handling of the scare, which is hitting sales in its biggest market.

Yum has more than 5,100 restaurants in China and is the largest Western restaurant operator in China.

McDonald's - the world's biggest restaurant chains by revenue - is rapidly building restaurants in China and has set a goal of having 2,000 in the country by the end of this year.

Sex of early birds suggests dinosaur reproductive style

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

In a paper published in Nature Communications on January 22, 2013, a team of paleontologists including Dr. Luis Chiappe, Director of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County's (NHM) Dinosaur Institute, has discovered a way to determine the sex of an avian dinosaur species.

Confuciusornis sanctus, a 125-million-year-old Mesozoic bird, had remarkable differences in plumage ? some had long, almost body length ornamental tail feathers, others had none ? features that have been interpreted as the earliest example of avian courtship. However, the idea that male Confuciusornis birds had ornamental plumage, and females did not, has not been proven until now. Chiappe and the team studied hundreds of Confuciusornis fossils unearthed from rocks deposited at the bottom of ancient lakes in what is today northeastern China and found undisputed evidence of the gender difference: medullary bone.

Chiappe conducted the study with Anusuya Chinsamy of the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cape Town, South Africa; Jes?s Marug?n-Lob?n of Madrid's Universidad Auton?ma, Cantoblanco; Gao Chunling and Zhang Fengjiao of the Dalian Natural History Museum in China.

"Our discovery provides the first case of sex identification in an ancient bird, an animal closely related to dinosaurs, such as the famous Velociraptor," said Chiappe. "When people visit dinosaur exhibits, they often want to know if the skeletons are male or female. We have nicknames like Thomas and Sue, but of all the thousands of skeletons of dinosaurs or early birds found around the world, only the sex of a few has been determined."

According to Chinsamy, the bone histologist on the team, "Just like modern hens, female Confuciusornis birds that lived 125 million years ago deposited this special bone inside their long bones, and then used it to make the calcium-rich eggshells." Finding such tissue ? present during a short period of time in reproductively active females ? in a specimen that lacked long feathers proved that those birds without ornamental plumage are females.

"This now permits us to assess gender differences in growth and development of this Mesozoic bird," she said.

But while this discovery offers evidence that both early and modern female avian species were essentially using the same physiological strategy to reproduce, it also spotlights an important difference in when they sexually matured.

"In human terms, knowing the sex of these specimens sheds light on when these early birds begin puberty," said Chiappe, "Now we know that early birds began reproducing way before they were full grown, a pattern that contrasts with what we know of living birds, which typically begin reproducing after they reach full body size." In that way, ancient birds produced offspring like dinosaurs, which also began to reproduce before they were fully grown.

The specimens, housed at the Dalian Natural History Museum in northeastern China, had been excavated from rocks formed at the bottom of ancient lakes in a forested environment surrounded by volcanoes. Ancient catastrophes, presumably related to volcanic eruptions, killed large numbers of birds and other animals, whose bodies were buried deep in the lake mud that helped minimize decay and preserving the organs, skeletons, and plumage. "This discovery is part of the big picture of understanding the early evolution of birds,'' Chiappe said, "and how living birds became what they are."

Supersized court challenge to New York City's ban on big, sugary sodas

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The beverage and restaurant industries on Wednesday urged a New York judge to block Mayor Michael Bloomberg's ban on large sugary drinks, calling it an unconstitutional overreach that burdens small businesses and infringes upon personal liberty.

The ban, scheduled to go into effect in March, outlaws the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces from New York City's restaurants and many other eateries in an effort to combat obesity. City officials have said they will not begin imposing $200 fines on offending businesses until June.

James Brandt, a lawyer for the American Beverage Association, which represents companies like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Dr Pepper Snapple Group, told Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Milton Tingling that the ban, approved last September by the city's health board, represents an illegal end-run around the city council.

"What makes this ban patently offensive is that the regulation at issue is promulgated by the Board of Health, a group of civil servants who are not elected by the citizens, who are appointed by the mayor of New York and as a practical matter serve at his discretion," Brandt said.

City attorney Mark Muschenheim, however, said the health board has the legal authority to pass regulations to protect the "safety, health and well-being" of the city's residents.

The ban is the latest initiative in Bloomberg's years-long quest to use the city's regulatory power to improve public health. During his tenure, the city has outlawed smoking in bars and restaurants; required chain restaurants to post calorie counts; and barred the use of trans fats in food preparation.

The city has defended the rule as a reasonable measure to address the growing problem of obesity.

"There is an association between sugary drinks and obesity," said Thomas Merrill, a lawyer for the health department.

Tingling did not indicate when he will rule, and Brandt said the plaintiffs will soon move separately for an emergency stay.

Minority organizations like the NAACP and a New York pro-business group have filed court papers in support of the challenge, expressing concern about the ban's potential impact on small and minority-owned businesses. Several city council members also oppose the regulation.

Meanwhile, public health advocacy groups have joined in the city's defense.

Brandt told Tingling that the ban favors certain businesses at the expense of others. The regulation only applies to food service businesses under the aegis of the health department, which means convenience and grocery stores will not be affected.

Cup and bottle manufacturers have complained that many of their products barely run afoul of the ban. A 500-milliliter glass bottle, for instance, used by certain drink makers, is 16.9 ounces, while "16-ounce" cups are typically a shade larger so that restaurants don't have to fill them to the brim.

The ban exempts drinks that contain more than 50 percent milk, which means milkshakes or high-calorie frozen coffee drinks will also be allowed, Brandt said.

"You'll be able to go into a 7-Eleven and buy the biggest Big Gulp you want, but you're not able to go to a Sabrett hot dog stand and buy a 20-ounce Coke or Pepsi," Brandt said.

But Thomas Merrill, a lawyer for the health department, said the regulation may not be a "silver bullet" but represents a positive step in reducing obesity.

"The perfect cannot be the enemy of the good," he said.

Brandt also warned that the ban, if allowed, could eventually lead to even more restrictive regulations.

"What comes next? Red meat twice a week but no more?" Brandt said. "No jay-walking?"

Tingling interrupted him with a smile.

"For the record, counsel, jay-walking is illegal," he said, drawing laughs from the gallery.

The case is New York Statewide Coalition of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce et al. v. New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, New York State Supreme Court, New York County, No. 653584/2012.

About Heart Health: Understanding Heart Failure | Healthmeup.com

The number of elderly people, and nowadays young people, developing heart failure is increasing. Before we look at what leads to heart failure, it?s necessary for us to understand what exactly heart failure is. Dr. Suresh Vijan, Consultant Cardiologist, Lilavati Hospital, Fortis Mulund & Hinduja Khar Hospital explains, ?The general notion is heart failure means that the heart has stopped working or will eventually stop working. Heart failure is a condition in which a weakened heart is unable to pump the normal amount of blood carrying oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Heart failure cannot be termed as a disease but is a chronic syndrome that generally develops slowly. If the heart failure is mild, it may not significantly affect a person's lifestyle and day-to-day living. On the other hand, severe heart failure can affect a person's every move and can be fatal. Thus the severity can range from a very mild heart failure to a severe heart failure.?

Dr. Suresh Vijan explains all about heart failure, its prevalance in India, symptoms, causes and treatment. Take every detail in account and take care of that thumping heart...

Mozilla Devs Are Working To Optimize Firefox For The OUYA Android Game Console

firefox-ouyaTo say that the Android-powered OUYA game console has garnered some serious attention is a hell of an understatement, and that's sure to be the case as developer units keep trickling out into the wild. As it turns out, it's not just game devs that are getting some hands-on time here -- some of the folks at Mozilla may be working on getting a version of its Firefox mobile browser up and running on the game-centric cube in short order.

Continuing our alphabetical exploration of London?s sporting clubs and facilities.

Handball

Handball has seen a surge in popularity off the back of the Olympic Games, when the England Handball website crashed under unprecedented demand. It is the second most popular sport in Europe and involves two teams of seven players attempting to throw a ball into the opposition?s net. It is hard to understand why it is still a relatively minor sport in the UK as it is similar to 7-a-side football, you just use your hands. However, the sport is growing and England Handball offers a club finder with around 17 clubs in the London area. Examples of popular local clubs include the London Great Dane Handball Club in East London, Olympia Handball Club London and the Ruislip Eagles. If you are interested in trying this sport, it is worth checking the England Handball news section for updates on London taster sessions.

Hang Gliding
A very popular and simple air sport, hang gliding is relatively easy to pick up, taking only a few days to become proficient. After that, the sky really is your limit! The Green Dragons in Woldingham, South London is a good place to start, with courses available for beginners. For a one-off session, Learn to Fly in Upminster offers a tandem flight for around ?190 with discounts for weekday flying or small groups. The British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association also have a Hang Gliding School Finder for places slightly further outside of London. It is possible to soar up to 16,000 feet and the UK distance record is 250km, so potentially this could become a new commuting method?

Hatha Yoga
This is one the gentlest and most basic forms of yoga, and will suit complete yoga beginners. Most hatha yoga classes tend to involve slow-paces stretching with simple breathing exercises and seated meditation. Yoga centres are now everywhere in London and the vast majority should offer hatha yoga. Notable examples include Hatha Yoga London, Yoga Place in Bethnal Green and Shanta Yoga in London Bridge. ?Most major gym chains and London leisure centres also tend to offer yoga classes. Furthermore, hatha yoga tends to be one of the most common classes and good examples can be found at the Fusion leisure centres such as The Ladywell Leisure Centre and Dulwich Leisure Centre.

Hiking
This sport is self-explanatory and although perhaps implies scaling mountains, there are still plenty of hiking opportunities around London. First port of call should be the 2,360 acre Richmond Park, London?s largest park with stunning views and galloping wild deer particular highlights. For more organised hiking the London Adventure Group unites walking enthusiasts of all kinds, and organises walks around London and beyond. Meetup.com is also a good source for hiking groups and a great example is the catchy-named ?Outdooraholics? who tend to be young at heart late 20?s to early 40?s. There are some useful guides to London hiking such as London Hiker, and the aptly named Walking Club can help you find places to go, particularly outside of London.

Hockey
Dating from the 18th century, hockey is played regularly by over 100,000 people in the UK, and in 116 countries worldwide. Traditionally, this sport is 11-a-side and played on either grass or astroturf, particularly in schools. Popular London hockey venues include the Battersea Park Astroturf, Paddington Recreation Ground and Kennington Park. Most of the larger independent schools, such as?Alleyn?s School?and?Dulwich College,?also usually have at least one pitch. Serious players can use England Hockey?s club finder to source their nearest club, with Blackheath hockey club the oldest in the world, dating from 1840. Recognising that time constraints are a major barrier to hockey participation, England Hockey has also introduced a fun new 5-a-side format known as Rush Hockey. This is usually open to men and women, incidentally making it ideal for flirting, and is played all over London. Drop in sessions are also available for the time-poor ? check out the Rush Hockey Game Finder for a game near you. Finally Matchtea.com also has details over 100 London Hockey Pitches.

Hula Hooping
Though usually seen in the circus, Hula Hooping is actually a popular sport and classes are available around London. It is said to tone and strengthen the body, teach you balance and relieve stress. To get involved in this sexy sport, check out the London Hula Hoopers which offer classes at various venues around London such as at the Old Lillian Baylis School in Vauxhall. The latest details can also be found on its?Facebook page, which shows all the hula hooping classes happening in various parts of London.

Hurling
This Irish sport is a cross between lacrosse, hockey and football with prehistoric roots ? it?s been played in some form for over 3,000 years. It is arguably the world?s fastest team game, physically demanding and even brutal at times. Played on a Gaelic football field, with two teams of 15, the object of the game is to hit a small ball (Silotar) with a stick (Hurley) into the opposition?s goal or over the goal. Before helmets were made mandatory in 2010, you could usually easily identify a hurling player by their lack of teeth. The London GAA oversees hurling in London with details of teams and leagues. Otherwise the best hurling clubs to check out are the Kilburn Gaels, Sean Treacy?s and St Gabriels, which all play to a high standard. In addition to being huge in Ireland, this sport is played all over the world, particularly in Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.
