Authentic Vegetarian Recipes: Farari Chevdo/Chewdo (Hign Energy ...
There are lots of Indian dry snacks available in most supermarkets these days. ?Snacks such as Bombay Mix, Gujarat mix etc... Most of them have a variation of nuts and crisps as a base. ? Chevdo/chewdo is a Gujarati snack made usually during celebrations such as Diwali. ?There are lots of variations of chevdo/chewdo. ?One of my favourites is the Kenya chevdo has it's own unique taste.?
Farari Chevdo/chewdo is mainly eaten(by hindus) ?during the days and months of fasting. ?On the days ?Hindus fast, there is a list of foods that they are ?allowed? to eat. The list - often referred to as farari food - includes all the fruits and nuts, milk and milk products including yogurt. It also includes potatoes, sweet potatoes, cassava, tapiaco, ragigara flour etc?. In fact, the sumptuous delicacies you can eat in place of everyday food makes you feel that you are having a feast because of the variety you can make.
I like to make this Chevdo/chewdo for the fasting months but also all the year round as it has so many high energy nuts in it. It makes a nice snack to serve with drink too.
I have listed the ingredients I used. ?You can adjust them to your own taste and add more nuts or even raisins if you like them. ?I have also suggested some cheat ingredients - there is nothing wrong in accepting a bit of help at time!! The cheat ingredients will have salt in them so I suggest that you add no more salt to the chevdo if you are planning to?adding these readycooked products to the chevdo/chewdo.
Ingredients ( this will make about a kilo of chevdo/chewdo)
Preparation required (about 30 minutes).
Cooking time 60 minutes.
6 Medium sized new?potatoes (I used locally grown Charlotte potatoes)
1 cup?peanuts
? cup almond
? cup cashews
The following cheat ingredients are optional:
1 large bag of ready cooked crisps( I used Kettle hand cooked crisps)
1 small bag ready chip sticks (I used a supermarket's own brand)
1 small bag of ready fried jumbo peanuts?(I used a supermarket's own brand)
1 small bag of ready fried cashews.?(I used a supermarket's own brand)
1-2 teaspoons ground sugar or sugar substitute such as Splenda/canderal etc...?
2 teaspoons cloves and cinnamon powder (I ground it fresh using 1 part cloves to 2 parts cinnamon)
1 teaspoon ground white pepper
4-5 small sticks of cinnamon
5-6 ?cloves
3-4 chopped green chillies ( you can use more or less)
5-6 curry leaves (limdo)
2 tablespoons oil for tempering
1 litre oil for frying.?
1.?Peel and wash the potatoes. ?Grate them and soak them in cold water for as long as you can. ?if possible soak them overnight or at least ?but a minimum of 30 minutes. In my opinion the best potatoes to use for making crisps are new potatoes as they do not have too much starch. ?
2. ?Wash the grated potatoes two more times with cold water and then drain them using a colander and spread them on a clean dish cloth. ?Washing the grated potatoes removes the starch and the crisps won't go dark when frying them.?
3. ?Heat the oil in a wok or?karai. ?
4. ?To check if it's hot, drop a potato chip in the oil. ?If it rises quickly, then the oil is ready.?
5. ? Pat the grated potatoes with the dishcloth and then drop a handful of the potatoes in the oil. ?Reduce the heat and allow them to cook. ?The potato crisps will float to the top when cooked. ?Allow them to cook until crispy. Once cooked, keep them in a dry bowl. I find it easier to cook a few crisps at a time in a metal sieve. ?
6. ??Once cooked, keep them in a dry bowl.?
7.??Next fry the peanuts, cashews and almonds. ?These cook very fast so don't leave for too long in the hot oil. Again- I fry them in the sieve so that it's easy to take them out?quickly. ?In fact, they don't taste too bad if undercooked so just put them in the oil, turn once and remove them.??
7. ? Now mix all the ingredients together. All the crisps and nuts you have fried together with the half ?ready made crisps and nuts. ?If you feel it needs more nuts?or?crisps?- add more. ?This is all a matter of personal taste.
8.?Now add spices to the mixture. ?My suggestion is to use the spices you enjoy. ? I didn't add any salt but added 1?teaspoon of white pepper, ?2 teaspoons of the clove and cinnamon powder plus 1?tablespoon?of sugar substitute. ?Taste the chevdo/chewdo and adjust it to how you like it.?
9. ??Finally temper the chevdo (vaghar as the Gujarati's like to call it).?
10.?Take 2 tablespoons of oil and heat it in a saucepan. ?Add the cinnamon and cloves to the hot oil. ?Once the cloves pop, add the green?chillies?and curry leaves and allow them to cook for just a minute. ?Switch off the heat and spread this on to the chevdo mix. ?
?11. ?Mix well and store it in an airtight cupboard. ?This should be fine for a couple of weeks.

Shelbourne Park will become home for Sis Live Open 525 Final on Thursday, 23rd February. The winner will get awarded with the ?1,000 prize money.
One of the most promising entries is Glideaway Ace, Ace Hi Rumble?s three-year-old black son out of bitch Darkies Fergus, has only made two outings during the 2012 season. On 31st January, Glideaway Ace did not race.
His second start was on 16th February in the Sis Live Open 525 Semi-Final at Shelbourne Park. Under training P. Cronin, Glideaway Ace clocked the 525 yards distance in 28.64 seconds and only had a shoulder?s margin from the runner up of the race, Danmar Benny, who was reeling in for the wire.
The evening?s favourite, Jacobs Courage, finished the race in the end.
The three-year-old has only been given two chances, one of which he could not even truly exploit and the other he grabbed right away which reflects that given another opportunity, Glideaway Ace will not disappoint his connections.
The two-year-old Courtlough Rio, Droopys Vieri?s white and blue son out of bitch Fois Gras, has only raced once during the 2012 season. However, Courtlough Rio made the most out of it and credited the race as his seasonal debut victory against his name.
He won the Sis Live Open 525 Semi-Final on 16th February at Shelbourne Park over 525 yards. He raced through the distance in 28.89 seconds, leading by 3 ? lengths. His success got him the ?1, 000 prize money.
Spider Man the 6/4 favourite of the race, finished third in line after the winner.
Yet another capable entry who has sustained her performance during the two starts of the new season is Black Hall Pearl, Hallucinate?s five-year-old black daughter out of bitch Carrigeen Leonie. ?
She was second in the Grade A1 Shelbourne A1 550 on 5th January against Tyrur Lanney who clocked the distance in 30.26 seconds. The 6/4 favourite of the race, Tolerton Crasher, finished fourth behind the winner.
In Black Hall Pearl?s next attempt on 16th February, she was second under contention with Courtlough Rio, who was on the other side of the wire before any of the rest could make it.
Courtlough Rio and Black Hall Green have raced together before, what changes get incorporated after today?s race, will not take long to unfold. ???

Sanad Aero Solutions (Sanad), Mubadala Aerospace?s component and engine financing solutions group, has partnered with Abu Dhabi National Leasing (ADNL), a wholly-owned asset-based lease finance arm of the National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD), to provide up to US$ 169 Million (AED 620.7 Million) in lease financing to Etihad Airways for spare engine sale and lease-back transaction.
ADNL has provided Sanad with a fully underwritten long-term lease facility in support of the purchase and lease-back of five (5) GE90 and six (6) Rolls Royce Trent 500 engines. Each engine is contracted for a 10-year operating lease term.
Troy Lambeth, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sanad said: ?This is an important milestone for Sanad in attracting commercial debt at an early stage and with a key cornerstone customer in Etihad Airways. We are thrilled to have ADNL as a partner in this transaction and excited to explore other areas where we can expand our relationship through other transactions in our shared mandate to establish Abu Dhabi as a global aerospace hub.? USP15 promotes tumor progression by activating the TGF? pathway. Playing a highly significant oncogenic role in glioblastoma, TGF? is a powerful immunosuppressant allowing the tumor to escape the host immune system. It also acts as an angiogenic factor inducing blood vessels, promotes tumoral invasion, activates cancer stem cells, and in some tumors, induces metastases.
USP15 as a "Biological Thermostat" at the core of a TGF? chain reaction
Dr. Seoane's team has unmasked the USP15 enzyme as activator of the TGF? chain reaction. In tumors the USP15-TGF? axis is deregulated due to USP15 gene amplification leading to an aberrant TGF? activation.
USP15 acts by controlling and correcting the TGF? activity in the same way that a thermostat regulates temperature. If the TGF? activity is high, it reduces; and if it is low, it increases the TGF? activity. USP15 therefore achieves optimal TGF? activity.
Protein stability is regulated through the elimination or aggregation of ubiquitins, small proteins that establish which molecules need to be eliminated. This process is finely regulated by deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) such as USP15 which determine the correct level of a protein under certain physiological conditions. In this orchestrated manner, USP15 controls and adapts the TGF? receptor stability and, therefore, the activity of the pathway.
The problem arises when, in some tumors, the USP15 gene is amplified due to genetic mutations and the enzyme is over produced. The thermostat breaks down and is therefore only sensing the "cold" resulting in the overactivation of the TGF? pathway. Remarkably, this is not only a phenomenum of glioblastomas since the USP15 gene has also been found activated in other types of cancer such as breast or ovarian cancer.
Dr. Joan Seoane explained "When we inhibited USP15 in a real model of human glioblastoma, TGF? activity decreased and the tumor did not develop. USP15 regulates tumor progression and is critical in cancer."
DUBs (deubiquitinating enzymes): a novel avenue in therapeutic targets
Sometimes potentially powerful therapeutic targets are found but are not pharmacologically accessible due to their biochemical characteristics. "Enzymes in general - particularly deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) such as USP15, can easily be deactivated and are therefore good therapeutic targets", Seoane commented, "our results, generated thanks to the funding received from the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), show exciting new promise in improved treatment of cancer patients.".

Drones over U.S. may pose security risks ? Latin Business Today

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Thousands of tiny unmanned aircraft or drones flying into civilian airspace over the United States can pose a security threat as they may be difficult to monitor in the long run and some craft may fall into enemy hands, security analysts say.Although debate over the use of surveillance drones, approved by Congress this week, centers on civil liberties and individuals' rights, a much greater risk of hostile drones entering U.S. airspace undetected isn't being considered, analysts said.
The Federation Aviation Administration said up to 30,000 drones could be in airspace shared with airliners carrying passengers.
Current lobbying for the drones insists there will be enough qualified experts to operate the drones safely and not endanger airborne human traffic but there are many questions unanswered about how the drone operators would be regulated.
More important, at a time when government defense cutbacks are the norm, little consideration is being given to potentially unfathomable costs of maintaining a vast fleet of drones, their monitors and operators and the whole regulatory framework required to run the system efficiently and safely.
There is risk, too, that terrorists will attempt to penetrate the drone network with unpredictable consequences for the safety of the set-up as well as citizens, analysts said.
Once the bill has been signed by U.S. President Barack Obama, the FAA Reauthorization Act will allow the FAA to give drone traffic the go-ahead and develop regulations for testing and licensing by 2015.
The expectations are that the law eventually will streamline processes for multilevel licensing of drone flights by federal, state and local police and other government agencies.
The legislation follows vigorous campaigning by defense and security industries that see drones as a multibillion-dollar growth area.
The defense and security industries have already made up for declining revenues in direct defense acquisitions by developing new business to counter cyberthreats, border body scanners and giant merchandise scanners and a range of software to counter Internet fraud, identity fraud called phishing and hacking of sensitive corporate and government data.
The American Civil Liberties Union said the legislation could severely undermine Americans' privacy. The Electronic Frontier Foundation echoed those privacy concerns.
U.S. defense and security forces deployed drones of varying sizes in Afghanistan and Iraq. The CIA's armed Predator drone program targeted al-Qaida leaders but officials said smaller drones were deployed outside U.S. diplomatic areas in Iraq to monitor the safety of U.S. officials during their movements within the country.
In addition to the drones, the race is on to develop unmanned aircraft that can safely share airspace reserved for civilian aviation.
There's both military and commercial interest in having unmanned aircraft that can fly unaided by human pilots, most of the time.
Initially, unmanned aircraft likely to be released for sharing airspace with civilian airliners will have the option to require a pilot. Eventually, however, they could go unmanned and fly into airspace used by manned airliners using devices on board and control centers on the ground, industry data indicated.
The idea of civilian aircraft flying virtually at the mercy of unmanned craft cruising in their midst has delayed commissioning of such craft, both for practical and psychological reasons. But support for unmanned craft joining civil aviation is catching on, reports indicated.
Several companies are deep into research and development of optionally piloted aircraft. Among these, Aurora Flight Sciences of Manassas, Va., is experimenting general aviation Diamond DA42 planes to be able to market it as intelligence, search and reconnaissance planes.
Mav6 Blue Devil 2 airship has been designed to run pilotless or to have a pilot on board when required. The aerospace company, which has headquarters in Vicksburg, Miss., has designed the Blue Devil 2 airship to accommodate a pilot when necessary.

Deep in the heart of the southern Milky Way lies a stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula. It is about 7500 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Carina (The Keel) [1]. This cloud of glowing gas and dust is one of the closest incubators of very massive stars to the Earth and includes several of the brightest and heaviest stars known. One of them, the mysterious and highly unstable star Eta Carinae, was the second brightest star in the entire night sky for several years in the 1840s and is likely to explode as a supernova in the near future, by astronomical standards. The Carina Nebula is a perfect laboratory for astronomers studying the violent births and early lives of stars.
Although this nebula is spectacular in normal visible-light pictures (eso0905 - http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso0905/), many of its secrets are hidden behind thick clouds of dust. To penetrate this veil a European team of astronomers, led by Thomas Preibisch (University Observatory, Munich, Germany) has used the power of ESO's Very Large Telescope along with an infrared-sensitive camera called HAWK-I [2].
Hundreds of individual images have been combined to create this picture, which is the most detailed infrared mosaic of the nebula ever taken and one of the most dramatic images ever created by the VLT. It shows not just the brilliant massive stars, but hundreds of thousands of much fainter stars [3] that were previously invisible.
The dazzling star Eta Carinae itself appears at the lower left of the new picture. It is surrounded by clouds of gas that are glowing under the onslaught of fierce ultraviolet radiation. Across the image there are also many compact blobs of dark material that remain opaque even in the infrared. These are the dusty cocoons in which new stars are forming.
Over the last few million years this region of the sky has formed large numbers of stars both individually and in clusters. The bright star cluster close to the centre of the picture is called Trumpler 14. Although this object is seen well in visible light, many more fainter stars can be seen in this infrared view. And towards the left side of the image a small concentration of stars that appear yellow can be seen. This grouping was seen for the first time in this new data from the VLT: these stars cannot be seen in visible light at all. This is just one of many new objects revealed for the first time in this spectacular panorama.

White Galaxy Nexus is official, coming to the UK Feb. 13
Following reports from some online retailers early last month, we now have official confirmation from Samsung that the white Galaxy Nexus is the real deal, and will be going on sale next week in the UK. Sammy promises that the white (GSM) Galaxy Nexus will be making its way to "a range of stores across the country" from next Monday, Feb. 6.
Like last year's white Nexus S, the white Galaxy Nexus switches up the color of the chassis, rather than the bezel surrounding the screen. That means you'll get a classy white finish on the back and sides of the device, while the front is furnished in the same black glass as the original. Internally, it's the same Galaxy Nexus we all know and love.
So far we've heard nothing about any possible North American launch of the white Galaxy Nexus, however our fingers are crossed for the launch of the Sprint LTE version later in the year.
