Childhood Obesity Rises During OctoberYour Health Journal | Your ...

From WTHITV?..

Obesity is a growing problem across America, but it?s an even bigger issue in Vigo County.

Dinah Farrington, with Minority Health Coalition of Vigo County (MHCVC) says, ?Obesity is a huge health risk, because it can lead to a number of serious health issues. It can lead to diabetes, can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure. All of those things can be prevented.?

Farrington stated Indiana ranked 15th in the nation for obesity in 2011.

Vigo County ranked higher than the state average which means a whooping 33-percent of kids and adults who live in Vigo County are obese.

?That?s a huge problem. I mean, that?s a problem for health. That tells me people aren?t eating correctly, that people aren?t exercising,? said Farrington.

Obesity is also a growing problem for the average American?s pocket book, especially for those who depend of diabetic equipment.

?The meters are very inexpensive, but I think what most people don?t understand is those little test strips run about $150 a month,? said Farrington.

In an effort to make a change, MHCVC asked parents to take an active role in demonstrating and reinforcing a healthier lifestyle for their children.
