SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Ecstatic baseball fans packed the streets of San Francisco on Wednesday for a confetti-drenched parade and rally honoring the World Series champion Giants ? a Halloween treat made even sweeter as a repeat performance from 2010.
Tens of thousands of people decked out in the team's holiday-appropriate orange and black stood 30 deep behind barriers, climbed trees, camped out overnight and mounted rooftops for a chance to see their favorite players wave from convertibles and get serenaded by Tony Bennett singing "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
Giants Manager Bruce Bochy, who hoisted the World Series trophy from the back of a gold Rolls Royce during most of the 1 1/2-mile procession, credited fans and his players' "unselfish play" for helping to lift San Francisco to its second World Series victory in three years, an improbable double play for a franchise that had not won the title since 1954.
"In 2010, we characterized the club as misfits that came together and got it done," Bochy told the roaring hordes gathered for the rally in Civic Center Plaza. He said the tagline of the 2012 Giants was "never say die," a reference to the team's come-from-behind, post-season dominance.
"I thank you for always being there, for never giving up," he said. "Thank you for showing up wherever we've been and making this one of the greatest moments of my life."
As with the 2010 parade, this year's two-hour edition drew a cross-section of the region's diversity, from children who were allowed to skip school to older couples who had been Giants fans since the team arrived in San Francisco from New York in 1958.
Series MVP Pablo Sandoval, who swatted three home runs in his first three at bats in Game 1, and second baseman Marco Scutaro, who batted in the winning run of the game that clinched the title, addressed the throngs at the rally in Spanish.
"This is the second, but there are going to be a lot more," Sandoval said, expressing special thanks to the Bay Area's Latino community. "You should enjoy this and feel this in your hearts."
Casandra Buenrostro, 25, who arrived at the plaza at 5 a.m. so she could get pictures of Sandoval, did.
"He made me cry," Buenrostro said. "He's an inspiration."
Earlier in the day, clouds of black, orange and white confetti were shot from cannons positioned on roofs and along the canyon-like, skyscraper-lined street. It showered spectators and parade participants, who included legendary Giants alumni Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal and politicians such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
The unifying energy of the Giants' latest victory was evident as San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith drove the car carrying Giants pitcher Matt Cain and his family, while 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh did the honors for the Giants' Brandon Belt.
The convertibles gave fans clean views along the parade route that began at the foot of Market Street near San Francisco Bay and ended on the steps of City Hall, across from the overflowing plaza.
Star reliever Sergio Romo, wearing a T-shirt that read, "I just look illegal," whipped the roaring crowd into a frenzy when he got out of his convertible and mingled.
"It's unbelievable! Unbelievable! Just great!" said fired-up right fielder Hunter Pence, who was acquired in a midseason deal and led pregame pep talks. At the rally, Pence persuaded his teammates to jump around the stage to demonstrate the ritual.
"I loved it when they started acting goofy," said Janet Clark, 55. "That's exactly who the Giants are."
With the victory parade coinciding with Halloween, costumed masses brought an even more festive feel to what city officials hoped would be a family friendly, alcohol-free event.
Richmond resident Kevin Yarbrough wore a giant white panda costume in tribute to Sandoval, whose nickname is the "Panda."
"You've got to come out and celebrate like this. You meet a whole new family, make new friends, and it really lets the community celebrate in a positive way," he said.
San Francisco police spokesman Michael Andraychak said a handful of people were arrested for public intoxication and officers issued a few citations for fighting, but the crowds generally were cooperative.
Some fans carried brooms as a reminder of the Giants' four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers. Later, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee handed Giants President Larry Baer a ceremonial metal "broom to the city" along with the customary key.
Alex Warlen and Kelly Simms, both 17, were among the hundreds of people who camped out overnight in the plaza to ensure they had prime viewing spots. Warlen is a pitcher and Simms a catcher for the softball team at San Francisco's Mercy High School. The team is co-champion of its division.
"Buster is the reason I'm a catcher," read a sign Simms carried, referring to the Giants' Buster Posey. The high school seniors said Mercy administrators gave students the day off, so they weren't cutting school.
"We would have skipped anyway," Simms said.

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) ? Tom Crean didn't really understand what he was getting into when he took the Indiana job four years ago.
Now, the mess is gone. Just look at the Hoosiers.
They are the top team in the Big Ten and Cody Zeller is the Preseason Player of the Year, according to a vote by conference media, results that were hardly surprising given their jump last season.
All the Hoosiers did was orchestrate a 15 1/2 -game turnaround that matched the biggest in Big Ten history, going 27-9 on the way to the Sweet 16.
It's fair to say they've come a long way since Crean took over for Kelvin Sampson in the wake of the phone-call scandal that gutted the program.
"We had hit rock bottom," he said Thursday at Big Ten media day. "We had all kinds of issues that were inside the program. You don't take the job at Indiana thinking you're going to deal with what we were dealing with, but we did. And we weren't going to leave. That wasn't an option."
Crean said he actually had a chance to leave after his first season at Indiana, a 6-25 nightmare in 2008-09 that included a 1-17 conference record, and he would have earned what he was making in his previous job at Marquette. It took him "about 10 seconds" to say no.
Now, the Hoosiers are back on top in a conference that appears to be loaded.
Michigan and Ohio State were picked to finish second and third after sharing the regular-season title with Michigan State last season, and the way Crean sees it, those three are the teams to beat until someone unseats them.
The Hoosiers have as good a chance as any, with the 6-foot-11 Zeller back after averaging 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds as a freshman. He was a unanimous pick for the preseason all-conference team, with Michigan's Trey Burke, Ohio State's Aaron Craft and Deshaun Thomas, and Penn State's Tim Frazier also making it.
"The target of being an Indiana Hoosier has never changed," Crean said. "Indiana is synonymous throughout the country for being known for a lot of things in basketball. It was always a big, big game. It was always a big deal when you were playing Indiana or Indiana was coming to town. And I think that hasn't changed. Will it grow some? Maybe. But I think the bottom line is a year ago, when there really weren't those outside voices talking in a totally positive light where the team was at, that didn't phase them. They continued to work."
The Hoosiers are facing no easy task.
Michigan is right there. So is Ohio State, even if its best player (Jared Sullinger) and one of its all-time leading scorers (William Buford) are gone after a Final Four run.
The Buckeyes still have three starters back. And Michigan State coach Tom Izzo likes his team's chances even though Draymond Green is gone.
"We have a chance to put together a pretty good team, and unfortunately it's in a tough conference this year and that's going to make a difference," Izzo said.
Strength of the conference was a big theme on Thursday, only this year it seemed like something more than coach-speak. There seems to be some weight to it.
"We're going to have to back it up," said Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan, whose team is coming off a 26-win season and Sweet 16 run. "We're going to have to play well, that's for sure. There are certain teams now in our league that have that 'X' mark on their back, but that's good. I think that's good, that quality competition, that interest, the outside interest of people saying, "Well, we think this team is pretty good." This team is pretty good. That's OK, that's great for the league."
For Indiana, it's been a tough climb back toward the top. The Hoosiers won just 10 games in Crean's second season and 12 in his third, before turning it around a year ago. Zeller's arrival was the extra kick the program needed.
"It's pretty crazy to think about how far we've come," senior Jordan Hulls said. "It speaks volumes of how Coach Crean and his staff have really instilled their lives into getting Indiana basketball back to where people are used to seeing it. Being part of the losing seasons and then now, last year having a pretty good year and then expectations for this year, it's pretty cool to be a part of that."
There is already a plethora of language translation dictionaries in the App Store, so what makes the new Languages for iPhone app by Tapity and Sonico Mobile so special? It's fast, reliable, stored directly onto your iPhone, and straight-up gorgeous. Languages also includes a lot of user interface elements and gestures that makes using Languages very intuitive and easy to use.
Having information stored locally on your iPhone is very important for apps like this. You never know when you'll need to look up a translations, so the last thing you want is to have to rely on your carrier's network connection to give you access to your dictionary. That's why Jeremy Olson, the Founder of Tapity, made offline storage a priority.
While Languages is going to be a lifesaver for students and travelers, I really think the fact that it works offline makes it valuable to almost anyone, regardless of whether or not they actively need translation. 99 cents buys you the peace of mind that you'll never get stuck without reliable translation again.
Languages includes 12 different translation dictionaries consisting of 8 different languages. Here's a list of the included dictionaries that will appear on a nicely designed bookshelf.
Spanish -- English
German -- English
French -- English
Italian -- English
Dutch -- English
English -- Portuguese
Swedish -- English
French -- Italian
French -- Spanish
Dutch -- French
Dutch -- Italian
Spanish -- Dutch
When you first download Languages, only the Spanish/English and German/English dictionaries will be installed as a way to limit the size of the app. You can download any of the other dictionaries at your leisure at no additional cost.
In dictionary mode, the words will be listed in alphabetical order. To jump to a section of the dictionary, tap and hold on the alphabet on the right. The letters will magnify around your finger and highlight the letter you're actually on. The visuals for this is really cool and makes it look like the alphabet wraps around your finger. When you settle on a letter, a second column will appear that alphabetizes a list of the first two letters of words included with your chosen letter. This streamlines your search and minimizes scrolling.
In the toolbar at the top of the dictionary, you'll find a search bar, a button that takes you back to your bookshelf, and a flag button that switches between primary languages. And because the developers are fans of gestures, even ones that are "just for fun", you can also pinch to close your dictionary and watch in animate back onto the shelf.
Dictionary mode is a great and all, but even with the enhanced alphabet scrolling, it still isn't ideal for looking up words in rapid succession. That's where Languages search mode comes in, and a quick swipe to the right gets you there. The curser will automatically jump to the search bar and a keyboard slides up. This is great for iPhone 5 users with small hands because it eliminates the needs to reach to the top of the screen to tap the search bar, especially when one-handed.
As you type the word, you'll get instant results. Words that are from your primary language will appear on the left and point to its translation on the right, and matches from the secondary language will appear on the right and point to its translation on the left. To clear the word and star over, a quick swipe to the right will delete the search field and bring the keyboard back up.
The good
Dictionaries are offline
Includes 12 languages
Gorgeous and intuitive interface
Time-saving gestures
Tap a word to copy it or jump to that word's dictionary entry

The bottom line
Languages is a gorgeous translation dictionary that will be a great companion for anyone who is learning another language or even those who are fluent in multiple languages but need to look up vocabulary from time to time. From the moment you start using Languages, you know that a lot of work, heart, and soul was poured into it and this is what sets it apart from similar apps. And at just $0.99 for 12 dictionaries, Languages is quite a steal.
ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? In the relatively new scientific frontier of topological insulators, theoretical and experimental physicists have been studying the surfaces of these unique materials for insights into the behavior of electrons that display some very un-electron-like properties.
In topological insulators, electrons can behave more like photons, or particles of light. The hitch is that unlike photons, electrons have a mass that normally plays a defining role in their behavior. In the world of quantum physics, where everyday materials take on surprising and sometimes astonishing properties, electrons on the outer surface of these insulators behave and look uncharacteristically like light.
These unique properties have piqued the interests of scientists who see future applications in areas such as quantum computing and spintronics, or other realms rooted in the manipulation of electronic properties. The early challenge to those researchers is to begin to understand some simple ground rules for controlling these materials.
Boston College researchers report that the placement of tiny ripples on the surface of a topological insulator engineered from bismuth telluride effectively modulates so-called Dirac electrons so they flow in a pathway that perfectly mirrors the topography of the crystal's surface.
Associate Professor of Physics Vidya Madhavan and Assistant Professor of Physics Stephen Wilson report in the current online edition of Nature Communications that scanning tunneling microscopy is capable of revealing the characteristics of these tiny waves as they rise and fall, enabling the researchers to draw a direct connection between the features of the ripples and modulation of the waves across the material's surface.
Instead of chaotic behavior, the electrons flow in a path that mirrors the metal composite's surface, the team reports in an articled titled "Ripple-modulated electronic structure of a 3D topological insulator."
"What we've discovered is that electrons respond beautifully to this buckling of the material's surface," said Madhavan, the project director.
So harmoniously do the waves flow across the ripples -- placed approximately 100 nanometers apart -- that the researchers say further modifications of the crystal's "nanoscale landscape" could produce enough control to produce a one-dimensional quantum wire capable of carrying current with no dissipation.
The rippled surface appears to exert greater control and run less risk of creating imperfections than other methods, such as introducing chemical dopants, used in attempts to modulate the flow of electrons on the surface of other topological insulators, the researchers found.
Madhavan said the team had to provoke the electrons, which lay placidly atop the surface-state of the insulator, much like the glassy surface of an undisturbed lake. The team disrupted the electrons by introducing impurities, which had an effect similar to that of dropping a stone in a calm lake. This provocation produced waves of electrons that behave like waves of light as they travel pathways that mirror the contours created in the crystal.
"We did not expect the electrons to follow the topography," said Madhavan. "The topography imposes a sinusoidal potential upon the waves. The ripples create that potential by giving the electrons a landscape to follow. This is a way of possibly manipulating these electrons in topological insulators."

Well, Octomom Nadya Suleman and her 14 children are enjoying life in Palmdale, according to the AP, despite their house being egged a few weeks after move-in. Suleman moved to the desert from La Habra earlier this month after her long-troubled house finally reverted to the bank in June. (She bought the house in 2009 and was behind on payments/close to foreclosure for ages; a Vivid exec at one point offered to cover the mortgage in exchange for assorted creepiness.) Now the four-bedroom, three-bathroom house has been flipped back on the market, with, it looks like, very little work done in the meanwhile. Earlier this year, TMZ reported that "the plumbing in the house is shot, and only one toilet is operational," plus there was all kinds of writing on the walls and various other damage. The new listing says the house "needs some imagination," but has "plenty of room for just about everything," plus a yard with a covered patio. The bank took the house for $355,643, according to Redfin. It's now listed for $475,000. ? 2051 MADONNA Ln [Redfin] ? Octomom Archives [Curbed LA]
It?s a strange time to be a young woman in America and to be facing voting for the very first time. When women are still making only 77 cents to every man?s dollar and when states like Arizona have recently passed legislation that requires all schools to leave abortion out of any lessons about unwanted pregnancy, it?s hard to look at our everyday struggles and not conclude that we are still living in a man?s world.
As a first-year female college student pursuing a creative writing degree, I can?t help but look at my future with a great deal of doubt and anxiety. Every year of college translates to several years that will be spent paying off student debt when I graduate. Who knows what kinds of odd jobs I will have to take when I enter the workforce? How will I ever afford to support myself? Adding to that is the renewed war waged on women?s bodies and the decisions they make about them.
As I prepare to vote in my first election, I?m particularly interested in each candidate?s positions on marriage equality, reproductive rights, access to education, and efforts to keep women and children safe. I took this decision seriously, so I watched the debates, hoping to hear the facts and making an informed decision on what I heard. Honestly, I was disappointed by both of the candidates? behaviors. I?m frustrated because instead of celebrating the candidate who tells the truth, we?ve been forced to settle for the one who lies the least. At the root of society?s ills lays systematic racism, classism, sexism, and heterosexism, and as I watch each of our candidates offering up their opponent?s faults and their own solutions to social problems, I can?t help but think that these are Band-Aids for deeper wounds. My peers and I aren?t interested in political stratagem and white lies; we?re ready to talk about the real issues here and to be included in the solving of these problems that are obvious but ignored in the majority of political discourse available to us.
For some reason, my generation has a reputation of apathy and stupidity, and I just haven?t found this to be true. Maybe you don?t hear from us in the larger political conversation because there isn?t a place for our voices to be heard. As the ?youth vote,? we are both feared and targeted while still being treated like children that just leveled up and can?t be trusted. As new voters, what are young women supposed to make of the binders of tokenism Romney was so proud of in the second debate as we prepare to enter professional worlds? When we hear the ridiculous insinuation that single mothers are the real cause behind the growing gun violence in this country, what are we to make of the celebration of ?the great American family?? Our president is all about defending the American people, but how many people are alienated and left unprotected under his policies? When he proclaimed his support of same-sex marriage, it was celebrated, understandably, but it took years of ?evolving? on the matter and an unplanned comment by Joe Biden to get him there.
No matter who wins this election, people are going to continue to be oppressed ? around the world, in your cities and hometowns, and probably even you. But if we give up completely on the system we live within, how will anything change? Is full-scale revolution the only answer? When I place my vote, I will do so in the service of a future where women are paid and treated equally for their contributions to our society, where schools are places of learning and growth that go beyond state-wide standardized tests, and where love, no matter what it looks like, is celebrated instead of shamed. I hope that this November every single one of my friends will vote, because the awesome power we have when we collaborate with vision and determination is stronger than we were ever taught to realize. If future elections want to speak to us, maybe they?ll talk about how my generation learned to underestimate ourselves?now that?s an issue, we care about.
By focusing on the rebels? criminal activities the government may be sending the FARC a signal that a failure to follow through on the peace process could see them permanently labelled as 'narco-terrorists.'

The Colombian government's estimate that the?FARC?makes up to $3.5 billion annually in profits from the?drug trade is staggering, but may not be entirely accurate.
Speaking at a forum organized by the University of Miami on Oct. 23, Colombian Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon provided the government?s latest figures on the illicit activities of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). According to Pinzon, the FARC makes between $2.4 and $3.5 billion annually from the drug trade. He added that of the 350 tons of cocaine produced in Colombia annually, some 200 can be linked back to the guerrillas.
Whereas the FARC were believed to have some 20,000 fighters at their peak in 2000, Pinzon said that they currently number 8,147, a drop of more than 50 percent in the past decade. Still, he noted that the rebels are ?a very different organization? than before, having lost several top commanders in recent years.
InSight Crime Analysis
Estimating the size of the FARC?s total budget is an inexact science. Pinzon?s estimate of the rebels? profits from the drug trade differs widely from a recent calculation released by the Attorney General?s Office, which put their total profits at around $1.1 billion. Both of these assessments are far higher than the United Nations Development program?s calculation in 2003, which listed the FARC?s annual income at no more than $342 million, with $204 million coming from the drug trade.
Additionally, Pinzon?s assertion that the FARC are ?linked? to nearly two-thirds of cocaine produced in Colombia is a deceptively broad statement. These links can range from involvement in overseeing the early stages of coca cultivation and processing to directly exporting shipments of the drug into neighboring countries like Venezuela or Ecuador. While the guerrillas have been known to participate in the latter, the former arrangement is more common.
Ultimately it may be best to take Pinzon?s figures with a grain of salt. He is likely playing the hardline "bad cop" at the same time as the government enters into peace talks with the guerrillas to try to end the country's five-decade-old conflict. At the negotiating table the FARC are recognized as having political aspirations and their involvement in the drug trade is barely on the agenda for the talks. By focusing on the rebels? criminal activities in his public comments, Pinzon may be sending a signal to FARC leaders that a failure to follow through on the peace process could see them permanently labelled as nothing more than "narco-terrorists."

For some people, retirement years conjures up visions of enjoying the things you have always wanted: driving around the country in an RV, going to see the world and places you?ve always wanted to visit but have never had the time to visit. So, planning your retirement is crucial if you want to enjoy it.
So, the question actually is ?which retirement plan should you choose?? IRA, 401K or both? These two retirement plans while different are both advantageous. So, please take a careful look at both options before making your choice.
IRA Retirement Plan
IRAs can be either traditional or Roth. A traditional IRA retirement plan often requires you to fund the plan outside of your workplace. People within a certain income bracket stipulated by the government qualify for this.
The good thing about a traditional IRA is that your retirement funds are either fully or partially tax deductible depending on how much you earn. These taxes are deferred until you start taking out of your retirement funds. Once you do, it becomes your income and income taxes apply.
Roth IRAs on the other hand involve making initial investments with money that can be taxed. Investors are also unable to immediately access the funds anytime they need it. However, Roth IRAs are very popular because there is no tax on the account as it grows.
And when you retire, you can start withdrawing from it, without worrying about taxes as it is tax free. This option is best for those who think that their taxes are likely to go up when they retire and for people who want a wide variety of investment opportunities.
401K Retirement Plan
Unlike the IRA that can be accessed by people within a certain income bracket, 401ks can only be accessed by employer-sponsored contributions. In essence, it is a retirement plan that you can only partake in if you are employed by a company.
While you contribute and your account increases, your funds are tax free and without any duties. The tax is generally deferred until retirement when you start withdrawing the funds. Some employers often pledge to match their employees 401K contributions.
So, if you contribute $500 every month, your employer will also pay $500 into your 401k; making it a total of $1,000 contribution monthly. This is about the best 401K plan you have as you have a 100% ROI.
Should You Do Both?
Yes, you can. While you can choose either of the two plans, you may also want to consider combining the two plans. As long as you don?t go beyond the yearly maximum contributions and income requirements, you?ll be fine. To find out if you qualify to do both, check the IRS website for the latest requirements and information.
The guys and gals over at Mint.com tell us why we should have both a 401k and an IRA
You can ?tax diversify? by having both a 401(k) and a Roth IRA
Your current 401(k) doesn?t allow incoming rollovers, and you have an old 401(k) (or two, or three) to consolidate
You?ve maxed out your 401(k) and still have more money to save
PS:? You?ll notice that I have purposely excluded income guidelines and limits from this article.? This is because the numbers change yearly and it is best to check the IRS website on limits around contributions and tax brackets.
Staying focused on my work has been of the biggest challenges that I had to overcome. It is so easy to get distracted with the information overload that we are bombarded with every single day.
From emails, Facebook, twitter, enviously reading our competitors websites and taking on more than we can handle, I knew I had to get a grip and become highly focused on only the work that produced results.
Here are my top 7 Tips for straying focused.
1.??????????? Do not check email until at least 4pm. Email can ruin you. Learn to use it to your advantage and do not let it use you.
Opening your email first thing in the morning will set you down a massive rabbit hole of being driven by other people?s demands and take you off your primary focus ? building your business and achieving your goals.
?
2.??????????? Only ONE hour of power of Facebook. Before you begin your Hour of Facebook Power ? use this checklist:
?
What is my goal ? what do I want to achieve from getting on Facebook. It may be to make new connections, to get information, to help others, to look for potential leads and clients or simply to connect with your friends. It doesn?t really matter what is it ? as long as you are CLEAR on the goal and you stick to it
Set a timer and do not go over the one hour. Remember, there is always tomorrow.
Stay on Facebook. It is Facebook time, so do not go on any other site during this time. You only have one hour so make the most of it.
?
3. Make a list of the 3 most important things that you need to do each day to move your business forward. Keep this list where you can see it constantly and whenever you are doing something ask yourself the question: ?Is this going to help me grow and move my business forward??
?
4. Make a list of all the things that you must stop doing immediately in order to stay focused. This can mean:
Putting your phone on silent and putting it in another room,
?Not going onto other people?s websites,
Eliminating multi tasking,
Avoiding conversations ? both online and offline that drain your time and energy.
?
Make your own list and post it where you can see it. Not doing certain things that you have identified as a major bottleneck to your focus and productivity is equally as important as doing your 3 most important things that move your business forward.
?
Be ruthless and eliminate the desire to apologize, feel guilty and explain yourself to people. Those who matter don?t mind, those who mind don?t matter.
?
?
5. Take regular breaks ? this could be going to a yoga class, going for a walk, a swim, or some simple guided meditations. This is usually when your best ideas will come and will actually keep you focused because they will keep your body, mind and spirit invigorated and ready to take more focused action
?
6. Plan out your day and be ruthless about sticking to your plan. Do not let anything distract you. Put your phone away, shut down any sites that are distracting and train others by letting them know the times that you are not available.
?
If they don?t like it, that is none of your business, if you lose friends, they probably were not worth keeping in the first place. Better yet, you may teach them a lot about boundaries and how to stay focused and achieve their own goals.
?
7. Create a clutter free environment. In order to stay focused and work with clarity, your environment needs to be supportive of your intention. Clear away any visible distractions. Create empty, white space where you work and practice maintaining a minimalist work environment.
How do you stay focused on your work and your major goals?

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? The NFL players' union might challenge former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue replacing Roger Goodell as the appeals officer in the Saints' bounties case.
The players association has concerns about "ethical and legal issues," a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the union has not made any public statements.
The NFL had no comment.
Tagliabue is scheduled to hear the appeals of Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith, Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargrove on Oct. 30. He was appointed Friday by Goodell, his successor as commissioner.
Tagliabue works for the law firm that is defending the league in U.S. District Court in Louisiana in the bounties case. The NFLPA believes that's a conflict of interest. The union also might contend that such "pay-for programs" existed when Tagliabue was commissioner, with his knowledge.
The NFL and the union discussed the possibility that Tagliabue would step in if Goodell recused himself from hearing the appeals, and the union also suggested "several outsiders" who could be used in place of Goodell, the person said.
Vilma was suspended for the 2012 season and Smith was banned four games for his role in the bounties program. Fujita, now with the Browns, was barred three games, since reduced to one. Hargrove is a free agent whose suspension was reduced from eight games to seven.
"I have held two hearings to date and have modified the discipline in several respects based on my recent meetings with the players," Goodell said Friday. "I will have no role in the upcoming hearings or in Mr. Tagliabue's decisions."
Tagliabue was NFL commissioner from 1989-2006. For part of that time, Goodell was the league's general counsel.
The collective bargaining agreement with the union that was reached to end the lockout in August 2011 gave Goodell exclusive authority to hear appeals of discipline for conduct detrimental or to appoint someone to hear and decide an appeal. Goodell periodically has appointed others to hear appeals for club fines, personal conduct suspensions and for matters concerning drug and steroid policy.
Goodell handed down the suspensions in May and they took effect in July after initial appeals were rejected by Goodell. Those suspensions lasted through training camp before being vacated by a three-member appeals panel that instructed Goodell to start the disciplinary process again and clarify his reasons for suspending the players.
The suspensions were reissued by the NFL last week and promptly appealed by all four players. None of the suspensions is currently in effect because they were appealed within the framework of the NFL's labor agreement.
But all four players have asked U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan to throw out Goodell's disciplinary rulings on the grounds he has demonstrated bias against the players in his handling of the bounty investigation. The players say Goodell violated due process.

The distinction between ?the internet? & ?books? is totally arbitrary, and will disappear in 5 years.
The book is defined as a discrete coherent collection. The boundaries of a book are critically important. The creator?s intention is important. The book is intended to be coherent.
Why are books important?
A book is an best effort at providing all you need to know or feel on a particular topic.
Books govern our knowledge. A book is a:
node of knowledge.
That knowledge (and nodes) shapes our world. It?s the fabric of our world.
Books are a Network
The web was built to transform information. There is an expression of value based on links (what something is linked from and linked to). Each book should have a URL on the internet, and live natively on the web.
Wikipedia might be the best example. An article is edited by multiple authors, links to other articles to give context, and citations begin to organize external sources. Brings together knowledge into a container that makes these pieces useful.
If the web is the most efficient way to disseminate information, and books are the nodes of knowledge, why are books not published online?
What is the Business Model?
No pressing business case to publish directly online. The disruption that this will cause when it happen will be huge.
What does information want?
Information wants to be free. ? Stewart Brand
Information wants to be used, and it doesn?t trust you to know how to use it correctly.
Why are books kept off to the side, apart from the network? The Business Model.
Example (of Business Model)
Build books as a web object, then make it downloadable, printable, etc.
Engagement around the idea happened through twitter, an article on theguardian which discusses the idea from the chapter, and a lot of referrals happened.
On the side: provided analytics for web version of the book.
A webbook can generate interest in ways that an ebook cannot. The ideas in a webbook spread far more quickly, and far more easily than an ebook. Easier to find, built in analytics, and can have different business models.
You have a direct connection with the reader. Whereas with an ebook, you?re one step away.
Why Books Will Live on the Web
not defined by format
most important nodes of knowledge
web is most efficient technology to share
disseminate, find, use, build on in ways cannot be imagined by the original
The Process/Model
Creating an ebook is still hard, but online tools like PressBooks/Vook/Atavist/Booktype make it (almost) trivial and free.
The avalanche of books will be overwhelming once the tools become widely known. Other kinds of book writing activity will gain relevance, meaning more and more writing will be ?out there?.
More ebooks means each book is harder to find in promotion, discovery, etc. This ultimately means that those who connect with their readers better will win (which is what the web is great at).
Will ask why there even needs to be a business model, which will bring many books online.
Erica?s Story: Being openly gay as a Peace Corps Volunteer was, for me, impossible. I lived in a community of 300-people in the mountains of Comayagua, Honduras. Upon my arrival, I spent days visiting the homes and getting to know the families that lived in them. I was given incredible amounts of coffee, what amounted to loaves of sweet-bread, hundreds of tortillas and plenty of beans. When I left these homes to head back to my host-family?s home, I was given freshly-laid eggs to take with me. As time went on, I spent the majority of my days in my small town simply getting to know these people. They opened up to me. We talked about so many things. I remember having discussions about the meaning of life, the truth of an inevitable death, the importance of family, love and the many existences of god. We obviously talked about the state of the community, the hopes people had for the future. We would talk about the world and where it is headed. Families would invite me over to make bread or tamales, depending on the time of year. Through all of this, I can truly say that I grew close to many of my community members. However, nonetheless, there was one thing that I knew we could never talk about, one thing they could never know: my sexuality.
The people in my community took religion very seriously. All families belonged to either the Catholic Church or the Evangelical Church, and being gay was a horrible sin. There was one openly gay man of 24 years, who I will call Tio, who at times I would verbally defend when I heard other people criticize him. I?d say simple things like, ?It?s okay that he is gay. It doesn?t make him a bad person.? After defending him, I would be asked by various community members to step aside to have private conversations. They would tell me, ?Erica, I heard that you defended Tio, but love is between a man and a woman. You can not defend this boy for committing such a sin.?
After a trip home for the summer, I returned to my community with a new hair-cut. It was short. The Evangelical pastor, a woman who invited me frequently to her house for dinner with the family, told me she would have to pray for my soul because I went against God?s will; women are supposed to have long hair. These incidents made me realize the impossibility of being completely honest within my community. No matter how welcoming and friendly the people of my community were, no matter how fond of me they had grown to be, if I told them that I was a lesbian, I truly believe that my work would have ended right there. No one would have wanted to work with me. People would have closed up. I had to pretend I was straight. As a straight person, people accepted me. I was able to work with their kids. I was able to build great relationships, and I will say that in the end, it was worth it. For me, it was worth it to be in the closet for two years. It was worth it to sacrifice a certain part of me in order to truly make the most of a meaningful experience. However, to be able to say that I could have had the same experience as an openly gay person within a culture that does not understand the truth of human-sexuality would be na?ve and a lie.
Camila?s Story: As a Peace Corps Volunteer, I was never explicitly told to lie about my sexual orientation. Instead, I was asked to understand the culture and community I was trying to become a part of. It was more difficult than I had anticipated. Although I am from the Mid-West and have very traditional parents, I had spent the last four years at a small liberal arts college in Massachusetts and had finally learned to be proud of my sexual orientation. Thus, Honduran culture, for me, was especially difficult as it is steeped through and through in machismo and intense patriarchy. At the same time, the generosity and amiability of the people almost make up for it. About six to seven months into my service I had to be site changed from my mountain community of 300 people to a larger ?rural city? community further south. A community partner had displayed some bizarre behavior that made me feel outed within the community. Thus, I felt I had to leave because the rumor mill would stop short anyone who was at one time willing to work with me. I also felt unsafe. I remember that night before I was set to leave, and I was fighting visions of people busting through my front door with the idea of ?corrective rape.? I don?t personally know of any of these cases happening in Honduras, instead, people would just get killed.
In my new community I felt extremely cautious. I was constantly analyzing myself. Eventually, I got settled in and made a few close friends. I worked with a local Honduran environmental NGO and worked with other volunteers on environment classes, HIV/AIDS classes, and improved stoves projects. However, I never told any Hondurans about my orientation. Miraculously, Erica and I started dating, and I say miraculously because we never considered dating one another until it happened. We were both in the Protected Areas Management Group, which has since been cancelled and lumped together with the Business Program. Sadly, there are no current programs that have a specific goal of addressing issues such as loss of biodiversity and environmental education. We were about one year into our sites when I would go visit Erica and she would come visit me, taking turns doing the 8-hour bus ride. We both feel that we looked somewhat innocent since close friendships between females are not unheard of or frowned upon. Yet, we had no time to confirm or disprove our notions because we were evacuated about seven to eight months before our official completion of service.
The day before I left I came out to my closest friend in my community. She said she already knew and knew within the first month of meeting me! I was surprised and sad that I missed out on a deeper more honest relationship with her because I was afraid. Yet, the real tragedies are the thousands of individuals that are beaten, murdered, and subjugated because of who they love. Honduras has seen an increase in violent hate crimes, although reporting is spotty on the subject. Also, with a friend, we re-started the LGBTQ support group for volunteers in Honduras and were starting to make connections with Honduran ?clubs? or support groups. Yet, that too was cut short. There has been straight forward reporting on exactly why the program was cut short: Peace Corps could no longer guarantee our safety due to the ever-escalating drug war. We have since called back to friends in Honduras who have said the situation has only gotten worse, violence is spreading and rural communities are cut off from the larger cities because the roads are too dangerous.
In the end, I think your service is what you make of it. I am proud and happy with my time spent in Honduras. However, I would caution that one shouldn?t expect to be out and shouldn?t expect understanding.
Erica Continues: It is hard to say if people in my community ever grew suspicious of the relationship I had with Camila. She came to visit me at my site more consistently than any other volunteer. And while we tried very hard not to seem suspicious within my small-community, there were times when I questioned certain comments made by my community members. Was it all in my head? Maybe. Maybe not. I remember taking Camila to my host family?s house where my host mother gave us coffee and tried to convince me to date the family?s cousin who recently came from out of town. My host-mother would describe how nice of a man he was, and how he is different than most men. Camila would play along, saying things like, ?wow, he sounds like a catch? as she would throw me a mischievous smile. Camila even took a picture of this man and me standing together outside of my host family?s home. They thought it was essential to our future together. When Camila and I would return back to my house, hiding behind the privacy of closed doors, we would talk about the same questions that today we still ponder, such as how much does ?respect? and being ?culturally? sensitive turn into tolerating intolerance? What is our role as queer Peace Corps Volunteers and allies in educating around sensitive subjects such as sexual orientation? How are we to facilitate change if we, ourselves, are doing our very best to uphold cultural norms? These are the questions we would like to leave with you.

Moffitt researcher says no survival advantage with peripheral blood stem cells versus bone marrow Public release date: 19-Oct-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Claudio Anasetti, M.D., chair of the Department of Blood & Marrow Transplant at Moffitt Cancer Center, and colleagues from 47 research sites in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network conducted a two-year clinical trial comparing two-year survival probabilities for patients transplanted with peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow stem cells from unrelated donors. The goal was to determine whether graft source, peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow, affects outcomes in unrelated donor transplants for patients with leukemia or other hematologic malignancies.
Fifty transplant centers in the United States and Canada participated in this phase III study, which randomized 278 patients to receive bone marrow and 273 patients to receive peripheral blood stem cells as the graft source for transplant. The results of the study are in the Oct. 18 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
According to the trial analyses, there were no observed differences in overall survival, relapse, non-relapse mortality, or acute graft-versus-host disease (GHVD) between the patients receiving peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow stem cells from unrelated donors. GVHD is a serious and often deadly post-transplant complication that occurs when the newly transplanted donor cells attack the transplant recipient's body. While engraftment was faster in patients receiving peripheral blood stem cells, there was a higher incidence of overall chronic GVHD in these patients (53 percent) than in those transplanted with bone marrow stem cells (40 percent). Patients receiving transplants of peripheral blood stem cells from unrelated donors also had a higher incidence of chronic GVHD affecting multiple organs (46 percent) than patients who received bone marrow stem cells (31 percent).
"Although peripheral blood stem cells from related donors have demonstrated clinical benefits, our trial demonstrates that when these stem cells originate from unrelated donors, they are not superior to bone marrow stem cells in terms of patient survival, and they increase the risk for chronic GVHD," said Anasetti, lead study author. "More effective strategies to prevent GVHD are needed to improve outcomes for all patients receiving unrelated donor transplants."
Peripheral blood stem cells are stem cells originally found in the bone marrow that have been moved into the blood stream by a special regimen of drugs. Unlike bone marrow stem cells, which must be extracted from the bones in an operating room, peripheral blood stem cells are more easily obtained through apheresis, a process similar to regular blood donation, which collects the peripheral blood stem cells through a tube inserted in a vein. A critical step before the transplant involves finding a donor that is tissue matched to the recipient.
About one-third of patients who need a peripheral blood stem cell or bone marrow transplant for treatment of leukemia or another blood disease are able to secure a related donor. According to the National Marrow Donor Program, for the 70 percent who cannot find a donor within their family, most will be able to find an unrelated donor. Because the majority of transplant patients need cells from unrelated donors, it's necessary to better understand the risks associated with transplants of unrelated donor cells.
Clinical trials on related donor transplants have demonstrated that peripheral blood stem cell transplants in patients with leukemia and other blood diseases result in better engraftment, lower relapse rates, and increased survival compared with transplants with bone marrow stem cells. However, those trials also found that peripheral blood stem cell transplants carry an increased risk of GVHD. Patients who survive early post-transplant may develop chronic GVHD, a disabling condition managed with long-term immunosuppressant therapy.
Many transplant centers are increasingly using peripheral blood stem cells as a source for adult stem cells because of their superiority in clinical trials that have directly compared outcomes between peripheral blood stem cells and bone marrow stem cells from related donors. However, there has not been a comparative study of the two transplant sources that has prospectively analyzed patient outcomes in unrelated donor transplants.
