In the midst of the intolerance that has been sweeping across Europe, Germany has decided to ban circumcision after a rabbi was caught red-handed performing it.
Charges were immediately directed against the rabbi at a regional court in Cologne on the alleged grounds that the practice of circumcision doesn?t fit the culture of Germans whatsoever.
This decision on the part of the German government, which encroaches on one?s religious freedoms, has brought about anger and controversy among the Jewish and Muslim communities, not only in Germany, but also all over the world.
Upon this ban, many religious freedom activists expressed their support for German Jews and Muslims and went on to accuse Germany of trespassing and ?breaking? the values of religious tolerance.
According to Rabbi Josh Spinner, CEO of The Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, banning circumcision may sooner or later lead to unsteady relations between Jews and the German political body.
As the Jews? and Muslims? calls about religious intolerance in Germany grows more intense, the German authorities are now trapped in a dilemma, not knowing whether to ban circumcision unimpeded or to abide by one of the universally-agreed values for peace, which is religious intolerance.
Irrespective of the reasons, the German authorities may base their ban on concerns over hygiene and medical health, German Jews and Muslims still maintain their stance and may decide to take to the street to restore their potentially confiscated religious rites at any cost.
What is of paramount importance for German Jews and Muslims is that circumcision is an integral part of their religious practice, and its banning, for them, will get the German government nowhere.
