Two Somerset teens arrested in family stabbing plot

SOMERSET, KY -- Two Somerset teenagers have been arrested in connection with a stabbing that took place in the early morning hours of January 16th.

Police were called to a report of a stabbing incident at 3:04am on Wednesday, January 16th. They found the homeowner, Edwin D. Phelps, stabbed and cut multiple times in the bedroom of his home. Phelps, 43, was treated at the scene and later flown to UK Medical Center in Lexington to receive treatment for his injuries.

The investigation into the incident uncovered a conspiracy by the victim's 17 year-old son and his 18 year-old friend, identified as Paul Scott Young.

The victim's son had asked Young to murder his parents. He allowed Young into his home on the evening of the stabbing. Scott then went to the parents' bedroom and began a knife attack in an attempt to carry out the murder plot.

But Edwin Phelps fought back against Young's attack, and was able to subdue him and hold him until authorities arrived, despite sustaining multiple serious injuries. Because the victim defended himself, no harm came to his wife, 44 year-old Laura E. Phelps.

Paul Scott Young has been charged with two counts of criminal attempt to commit murder. He is currently lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center.

The 17 year-old juvenile has been taken into custody and charged with two counts of criminal solicitation to commit murder.

A motive for the plot and crime is not yet known. The Sheriff's Department's investigation is ongoing.
